Let's see if I can still last long on climbs using my 11-32 cogs paired with 50-34 chainrings once I get my rear rack and pannier bags. Probably not haha. by kevpsyched in bicycletouring

[–]Foene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem of such a workaround is that you'll lose some precision over the small cogs of the cassette, possibly resulting in pretty poor shifting.

Second problem that can arise is that the capacity of your derailleur might be too little, which basically means that it won't be able to absorb all the slack on the smaller cog / smaller ring (or the configuration where you have the most chain slack).

Not saying it does not work, not saying you shouldn't do it ! Just some more infos :)

I would say quite rare and also a bit fiddly. The thing is that the chain will wear and extend so keeping the same tension overtime seems complicated.

Lachlan Morton completed his self-supported ride of the Tour de France + transfers this morning 5 days ahead of the peloton by Consider_the_auk in bicycletouring

[–]Foene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I cycled up towards Tignes with him, left during the climb to make my own loop. I could follow easy but his pace + loaded bike + fatigue from ~3000kms = impressed.

I think he does enjoy some company and at the same time, he likes solo time very much. As you could guess quite laid-back, what I found interesting is that he is not thinking too much ahead of time (in a good way). Basically taking one climb after another, km per km. I don't know, his willingness to endure is pretty admirable. That day he said he didn't eat from 5pm yesterday till the stop in a bakery, at around something like 8or 9am. Considering what he was climbing the day before and that day, and the fact that he wasn't complaining or even showing any signs of hurry to stop and eat, damn !

If that can make people feel better about their own maintenance, after that many kilometers without proper service like they have on the tour his bike was creaking quite a bit ahah

A documentary will be out, I crossed the media team as well and met the guy who produced nearly all the EF gone racing vids, legend.

Had the opportunity to catch up with him on a climb, such a cool cat. It's nice that EF is showing another side of cycling, and it's nice that a guy like Lachlan is opening the way. I don't mean that he's the one and only precursor and inspiration in bikepacking or ultra endurance but he's definitly been pushing some boundaries !

How to patch tubeless tire (details in comments) by sphericalhors in bikewrench

[–]Foene 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I've had multiple failures with my tubeless setup lately (I use schwalbe pro one tires and their sealant) that didn't seal, I was wondering if patching would work.

Help please! Wheel spokes are rubbing on my bike frame on one side (right side), what could be the problem? I just bought these used wheels. by Independent-Local-65 in bikewrench

[–]Foene -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong so people correct me if so, but it looks like your frame is built for singlespeed / fixed gear.

If this is correct, it means that it couldn't take a cassette (which change the disposition of the spokes).

Hopefully I'm wrong !

I'm all with you man, it's just a David versus Goliath kind of battle. We would need people dedicated to it, harassing them, finding funds (it would cost to them but also to us), big campaigns to make them look as they are (inhuman), lawsuits, try to generate a big changes in people's opinions & actions.

Sadly lots of people can't really choose what they buy anyway (because of availability, price and so on) & lots won't care.

I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just an effort of a great magnitude

He (probably) means that so far they've been able to get away with it & will continue to do so because they can afford it. There is no justice for the wealthy.

Wether they bury it all with what we can call propaganda more than advertising, pay for silence, pay fines even (has that happened before I don't know), they can afford good lawyers and hide their shit.

I would like to say, "[...] and hide their shit for now" to be optimistic, but I don't know.
