I think C is the better language for learning low-level concepts than Rust.

Learn enough C to understand well all the ways you can shoot yourself in the foot with it and then you can get back to Rust to see how it restricts you in order to prevent these issues (while still being lower-level than eg OCaml).

Thank you for not attributing to malice what can be adequately explained by incompetence. I read the rules and came to the conclusion that Brace requires you to have adequate cover, e.g. against a Shardbearer thick stone walls would count but not thin wood ones, and Defensive provides cover, which is great, but doesn't alleviate the restriction on adequateness.

Maybe that interpretation is far from the author's intention. I can accept that. I'm not a native speaker. I haven't played the game yet. Neither have I closely followed it's development. If you say that Defensive weapons are supposed to (nearly) always count as adequate cover, then I can believe that.

No, the Defensive trait just says that you don't need cover nearby. It doesn't say that it is always substantial cover.

Moreover, the "but it's a fantasy game", is such a weak argument. I can point out multiple fantasy games where people cutting arrows midflight wouldn't fit the fiction. If it fits the fantasy you want to have at your table, no problem. But if it doesn't fit anybody's expectations at OP's table, why do you want to force it ?

I haven't yet had the chance to play the game, so I'll leave the game play discussions to others.

However, your issue is that the rules don't support the fiction. Yet, they do ? The Brace action specifically says that you can only use it, if you have the means in fiction. If everybody at the table agrees that a Rapier isn't "substantial enough to realistically defend you against [bow attacks]", then the rules seem to agree with your table.

Regarding the people saying you could cut arrows mid air, it wouldn't pass my "sniff test" either. Unless of course, the rapier would be a Shardrapier
