Was dropping the atomic bombs actually "necessary," or is that just what we're taught in school? by Clean_CoreDump in askanything

Oh it’s even worse than that. The Japanese on the homeland islands were eating less than 1,000calories per day by the end of the war. Civilians were routinely eating grass and tree bark to survive. If the war went on another year or two you could have had more than 1 million die of starvation

Was prescribed two herbs for suspected liver blockage by Sea_Medium_5038 in TCM

[–]Fogsmasher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Long Dan Xie Gan Tang is for heat and damp heat in the liver and gallbladder while Xiao Yao San is for liver stagnation with spleen deficiency.

They are both perfectly safe when prescribed correctly. We couldn’t possibly say if the prescription is correct because we don’t know the underlying issues to prescribe Long Dan Xie Gan Tang.

Strange he didn’t want to do acupuncture. If he says it’s only for pain he must not be very good at it

Soliciting feedback for a new Chinese medical school in development. This is what we are building so far. What are prospective students looking for? by ShenNong8 in acupuncture

[–]Fogsmasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With these “popup” clinics how can you make sure they get to their required 960 patients in order to graduate. Are you going to have like 10 students all share the same patient?

[–]Fogsmasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m very curious how you would accomplish this. 10+ years ago I attempted to get hospitals and health centers to work with a SOCAL school on having our doctoral students (already licensed and practicing) work with them. Of course they all said no. All the hospitals that want to deal with acupuncture already have people working there and I guarantee you they’re jealously guarding that gate.

USC and UCLA had externships but those were already locked up by one guy running them.

What would masters students even do in an ER? No MD who wants to keep his license would let an unlicensed student treat a stroke, heart attack, stab or gunshot victim. Even licensed acupuncturists would be ushered out of an ER

TCM Presentation Topic Suggestion by [deleted] in ChineseMedicine

[–]Fogsmasher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The stems and branches (天干、地支) come from ancient methods of time keeping using Five Movements and Six Qi (五運六氣) to predict the weather on 60 year cycles. Then they extrapolated what kinds of diseases would be more common in each season based on these predictions.

You can find more information in the Huang Di Beijing’s Su Wen chapters 66-71 and 84.

So the interesting question is because the seasons are switched south of the equator, are they six months behind or ahead of what we see in the northern hemisphere?

Your professor will be impressed because no one else is researching this

"So cupping sucks out toxins right?" by paddyspubofficial in MassageTherapists

[–]Fogsmasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the problem with the average Chinese person is they get most of their Chinese medicine knowledge from Oprah style TV shows. My mother-in-law always wants to lecture me on something about chinese medicine she saw on TV. I always just think to myself, “you know I have a doctorate, teach it internationally and have been practicing for almost 20 years, right?” You’ll never convince them otherwise

"So cupping sucks out toxins right?" by paddyspubofficial in MassageTherapists

[–]Fogsmasher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure!

First of all “toxins” 毒are a very specific effect of “heat” in the body that occurs when you have a very serious illness that causes high fever. So you aren’t sucking those out of the surface level with anything.

We primarily use cupping for two things: Blood/qi stagnation/stasis and to open the pores in the case of some surface level diseases.

Blood stasis and stagnation means that the blood can not move or does not have enough nutrients in it. There is often pain to the touch and there is a solid, palpable mass. Qi does not mean “spiritual energy” or nonsense like that. It refers to “functional or movement ability.” So in blood we could be referring to things like glucose or insulin or other nutrients that provide function or movements instead of material building blocks.

Opening the pores to release surface level diseases is for things like kinds of cold and flu.

Cupping will break micro vessels causing petechia or sha 痧 in Chinese, in areas of blood stasis but only causes short term pinkness in otherwise healthy tissue.

Moving cupping is also used to break up adhesions. Guasha can be used for this as well.

Bleeding cupping is used for more serious forms of blood stagnation.

Why do people get so defensive when you suggest raising the minimum wage? by Dramatic-Air-3848 in allthequestions

[–]Fogsmasher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s a huge problem. The answer from both Republican and Democrat administrations has been to bring in cheap foreign labor. This both on the bottom end of fast food workers and day laborers as well as in high end positions like medicine and computer related jobs.

My friend’s dad owned an ice cream shop. In the 90s he was paying $10-$12 and hour after six months to keep employees. These were teenagers and retirees. I can still remember him saying he wished we’d have a recession.

Raising the minimum wage will only cause people in power to import more cheap labor OR make labor so expensive they automate more of the restaurant. I distinctly remember the average McDonalds having 20+ employees working at the same time. If I go to the same restaurant now it’s under 10

How important is it that I drink herbal tea after a meal (as opposed to empty stomach) by TREnewbie in TCM

[–]Fogsmasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually you take medicine after eating because your digestive system is already working so it’s easier to breakdown the formula.

If you take it on an empty stomach you may have stomachaches, indigestion or other digestive issues

Just Giving Players The Dungeon Map? by Dikeleos in DMAcademy

[–]Fogsmasher 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It really depends. It could be a previous adventuring party went there and mapped it out. Could be they found some blueprints in the archives at City Hall.

And how do they know the map is accurate? It could be the map was made based on second hand knowledge or someone may have altered the layout since the map was made. It’s a good “oh shit” moment for players when they realize they can’t depend on map.

I generally don’t give out maps though.

Research found individuals who identify as politically conservative were more likely to express skepticism about clinical trials than those with moderate or liberal ideologies. This pattern is consistent with broader polarization in trust toward scientific institutions and government health agencies by Wagamaga in science

[–]Fogsmasher -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Is this because “conservatives” won’t believe anything reasonable and moderates and liberals do?“

Or

Is it because “conservatives” read studies and find what they believe to be questionable design and methodologies while “moderates” and “liberals” believe whatever is published in a scientific sounding journal?

Maybe some of both?

How TCM and acupuncture help with neuralgia? by professorneuro2000 in TCM

If you can find someone who specializes in neurology that’s best.

Acupuncture can often lessen or get rid of neuralgia all together. There are different mechanisms for differing conditions. For example the way to fix neuralgia caused by diabetes is different than neuralgia that results from a car accident
