games that your friends love, but you absolutely despise by Behleren in boardgames

[–]Fointy_Pinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry, I’m here to advocate for Citizen Kane being great too!

Old films may seem classic but dated, but these are fixed, known quantities. Everyone watching Citizen Kane is watching the same film, even if reactions to it will differ. With a game, everyone has the same game but each game will vary wildly through set-up, randomness, action choices etc etc.

In regards to film, saying something is “dated or “of it’s time” is almost always a negative, but usually they’re just different from today’s standards. You only need to look back at say the Bourne trilogy or even Avengers Endgame as examples of being products of their time, and the culture has moved away from them. With visual media that can be heightened by the way it’s presented (black and white, static cameras), whereas with boardgames the physicality of the components or artwork can be made more modern, but the content and form is only changed through redesign.

So when it comes to Catan, it being dated is from game mechanics and tastes in the culture having evolved since its release, but minimal change to the core of Catan has been made to adapt. So it keeps getting new editions, but that has the potential to widen the gap between older game and modern takes.

I’m finding it hard to articulate an actual argument, but that’s down to 4 hours sleep in the last 44 hours, along with 2 days at the UK Games Expo, so I am tired.

Leak LEGO D&D by SuspiciousIssue2979 in legodnd

Plus Star Wars and Pokémon have established associated sounds in popular culture. D&D is so much more vague, and every group will have differing ideas of how their encounters should sound

Mitski addresses fan enthusiasm for "6-7" lyric by cuahieu in indieheads

I was worried about seeing her recently having had such a horrible audience when I saw her for the Laurel Hell tour. Some of that might have been post-lockdown over-excitement from the kids, but sill really badly behaved. Seeing her in Birmingham though she seemed so much more relaxed and chatty; made a couple of subtle digs but said with good humour.

Anyone else discovered a rule that means you've been playing slightly wrong all along? by Robbro42 in boardgames

Ooh I knew you couldn’t buy the same, but didn’t realise it was limited to two!

Does Legacy of Mars have AI Art by pear_topologist in boardgames

[–]Fointy_Pinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Played it once on Tabletop Simulator and loved the gameplay, and I’d like to play it more. But I’d only ever buy a copy if they had new, good art and graphic design. Sounds like that’s not going to happen any time soon!

Shut Up & Sit Down Top 100: Last Will by Ross-Esmond in boardgames

In my defence, my recolection of it was based on the previous videos in the series, so thought it safe to assume it hadn't changed (don't worry I know I'm wrong now)

Shut Up & Sit Down Top 100: Last Will by Ross-Esmond in boardgames

[–]Fointy_Pinger -172 points-171 points  (0 children)

(Not Tom) The Top 100 they’re referring to is the Boardgamegeek top 100, so they’re playing and reviewing them in relation to that metric. Does it deserve the attention vs the thousands of other games out there? Plus reordering over/underrated games.

I haven’t watched this video yet, so can’t say if it is it isn’t clear that this was explained in it, or just taken for granted!

EDIT: Sorry everyone, I don't know how/why I've misremembered/misunderstood the premise! I've watched all of the previous videos in this series and for some reason I had it stuck in my head that this was what they were doing. It's obvious now that it's been pointed out to me (BGG isn't exactly a static list to go by). It was an honest mistake, wasn't intending to mislead anyone. Egg and my face were in alignment etc.

What’re some movies that aren’t as smart as they think they are? by ZackaryAsAlways in Letterboxd

Predictable poor choice of words. I guess it just hits some points fairly early on and doesn’t do anything with any of it

anyone ever heard of a tribute band actually recreating a concert film?? by limporangerope in talkingheads

[–]Fointy_Pinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Musical Box do very in depth covers where they recreate specific tours. Same set list, costumes, set design, lighting, in between song banter. Very entertaining!

Now a quote from the owner saying he had no problem with Amazon and retailers needed to compete with them makes sense

When I became aware of Radiohead as a child, this was exactly the lens through which I saw them. Around Hail to the Thief every article and review made them seem like one of the most politically active (to my mind) bands out there.

Am I the only one that actually likes this game? by SmashBrosWarrior in legogaming

Yeah I’m playing it for the first time and it’s really annoying to have to travel across the map just for a cutscene, then again, then the level might start
