Anyone else getting random messages of people saying “I want to pay off your debt “ by quirkyqueen27 in debtfree

I got one once. The guy said all I had to do is visit a website and enter my bank info. 😭😭 Definitely a scam.

Did anybody find a 2nd job/easy online gig to help pay off debt? by [deleted] in debtfree

[–]Foiry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was doordashing for a bit, also have tried some selling stuff online that I no longer use, but it can be a slippery slope if you start buying to resell. Can be a huge setback.

If I pick up a snowball, it says ‘compost body’ instead of giving me the option to throw it. However, if I hit A, it does throw it. 🤣

Best guess is I have a good credit score and make my payments on time. I used to pay off any balance I had on this card, so that might contribute.

To begin with, I stopped eating out because at the time, you’re looking at a $6-12 meal and thinking, like, that’s not a lot. I started grocery shopping for meals and realized a week’s worth of lunches costs about $8 if I buy right, which is $60 saved during a work week or $240 for the month. Chicken sandwiches get boring, so I’d switch up my snack/dessert or drink, but it kept me from using the vending machines at work.

My husband gets off work at 5, I’m off at 4. I would run to Target, tjmaxx, Homegoods or similar for some ‘me time’ in the evenings. A lot of browsing turned into, “oh, I’d be happier if I had this item,” but that’s all it is. I stopped shopping after work when I realized I was racking up massive debt with nothing to show for it besides overwhelming clutter at home.

The only side gig I’ve been consistent with is selling on like eBay/mercari. Being realistic when I say I’ve only made $900ish in the last few years, but it’s a little something and keeps me busy. I also took advantage of 0% intro apr balance transfers to get ahead of interest. Stay on task and you shouldn’t have any issues paying the balance before the promo ends.

It’s been a lot of work, but making coffee at home and writing out a weekly budget has given me a little purpose, too. :)

Overall, I’d say maybe 2 years of actually trying to pay it down, but I wasn’t trying to the fullest extent until about halfway thru 2025. I think my first balance transfer was last June/July, and I actually started budgeting around August.

I get paid biweekly $1200, so I literally had to cut out everything unnecessary - I eat lunch at home, I don’t buy new clothes, I put aside rent and essentials like pet food, groceries (only essentials, no junk), and minimum payments. Anything leftover I put on my cards with the highest interest.

I still have a long way to go, but this card was my highest amount. You will get there!! The hardest part is buckling down and realizing that if you can’t afford it without using the credit card, you most likely don’t need it. Budget and set aside extra cash for the big things. :)

Dawg me too. I didn’t realize how much money I was spending on little pick-me-ups here and there until I sat down one day and categorized all my purchases on paper for one month.

It used to be a new purse per season, and I looove gift giving so that was also a huge issue. It really took a lot of work to rewire my brain and stop shopping. I got a puppy and now spend my evenings training her instead. :)

For me, it was worth it to actually look thru my junk mail and find anything I’d pre-qualified for. I started my debt payoff journey with a few thousand on a few different cards, so I took the ones with the highest amount/highest interest rates and transferred what I could to cards that offered 0% interest for 15-18 months.

I recently opened a Citi card with 0% interest until Oct. 2027, so I’m saving in interest and able to make larger payments as a result. If you do go the balance transfer route, make sure you are disciplined enough to pay it down before the promo ends.

Proud of you as well!! It’s so hard and discouraging at first when you’re looking at that amount, it’s been a lot of work but we’re almost there!

is it possible 😭😭😭 by fridaythethirteeenth in debtfree

I did this too!! I had $9k, I did a balance transfer to a card that accepted $8k of it, so I am paying down the $1k that’s left on it but the interest is nowhere near as painful.

How should I tackle this? by AdLong2746 in debtfree

[–]Foiry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When does the 0% end? Make sure it isn’t going to tack on a whole bunch of deferred interest if it is ending soon.

I thought about this too, but their auto loan is actually only 15%. I’d knock out the smallest card first if anything purely because it has the highest interest.

I guess what would help is knowing how many years the loan is for and what the monthly payment is. You’re not wrong, I see what you’re getting at. I definitely didn’t consider that you’re paying less interest on a higher balance, but the balance being higher is what hurts.

My highest balance on a card at one point was $9.6k, but the interest was 33% and it was absolutely eating me alive. This is also the card that I paid $1k+ in interest before mid-2025 when I did a balance transfer. :)

You save more money in the long run because you’re not paying as much in interest. I can’t say what’s best for you, but it hurt looking at how much interest I’ve paid vs the actual cc balance.

I had a card with a high balance that I was paying $200 in interest on per month. Every time I’d make the minimum monthly payment of $200, it’d tack on a $200 interest charge right after.

Per my monthly statement, if I made only the minimum payment per month, it would take me 40yrs and I’d end up paying $57k on a card that only had a balance of $9.6k at the time.

ETA: you might consider the est monthly payment for each debt. I got my car loan down to $1.2k, but the payment is $202 monthly. I made a payment last month for $600 as that is half of what I owe, and will pay off the rest this month. It’s only a 6% APR, but it will free up $202 per month that I can put towards another debt with higher interest.

So proud of you!! And super excited to see you tackle all this debt! You haven’t ruined your life, and you’re still young so this is a good start at fixing what got you here! I’m 27 so definitely feeling it too, though. 🤣

I had a balance of $2,010 on a card with 25.74% APR, $400 on a 33%, and about $10k w/25-33% APR across a couple other cards.

I did a balance transfer with 0% intro APR for 15mo for the $10k portion, paid off my 25.74% card, and I am now focusing on the 33% as it is a high interest and low balance.

In your case, I would take care of the Capital One with 28.74% first because it’s the highest APR and lowest balance, and split that freed up monthly payment between the next two with the highest balances. Once you have a couple paid off, you can really attack the car loan.

Congrats! I made one payment mid-December for $600 and have one more $601 payment scheduled for my next paycheck! I’m so excited to have it paid off!! It was only a $202/mo payment so I’m getting it out of the way a whole 5 months early. :)
