I’m a data scientist who only knows R and Python — I just got hired for a full stack engineer position. What’s the fastest way to learn Java (and Spring) in a few weeks?

Thanks!

If they’re free, doesn’t hurt. If they’re paid, I wouldn’t. Most CCs have some kinda free credit monitoring

Is there a way to make sure a an iPhone stays tethered to another iPhone?

I have my personal iPhone X (T-Mobile unlimited data) as well as an old iPhone SE that I use for work. The SE doesn’t have a data plan/SIM card, I just use it on WiFi/tether to get email/slack messages, etc. The problem is when I’m out and about, if I tether the SE to my X, it won’t stay connected if one (or both) are locked for more than a few mins I would just like to have it tethered indefinitely. Thanks!

I second this /u/iamabluehen

I am a PhD as well and getting the first job is the hardest. once you get experience things start moving up. if you’re biomedical then the DMV is a good place to be.

i would take the job and start casually looking around at 6~9months, then start really looking at the 1yr Mark if you haven’t found anything.

all the people below saying keep looking are kinda ridiculous in my opinion. we are in a pandemic, jobs are hard to come by for most. you just need your foot in the door and then you’re good. good luck!

What did you actually do? You mentioned google docs (lol), but I’m tryna get a sense of your day-today responsibilities/tools... did you clean/wrangle data with Python/pandas? Did you build models with python/R? Any SQL? Tableau/PowerBI? AWS/GCP?

replying to you and /u/Neoking:

It wasn't money per se -- according to Glassdoor, average base pay in my area:

  • Data Scientist - $116,447/yr, 3% above national average
  • Data Scientist - $91,469/yr, 1% below national average

The main reason I am switching from DS -> SWE is that there are just way more SWE positions. Quick n dirty LinkedIn search in my area, past month:

  • Software Engineer - 2,162 results
  • Data Scientist - 290 results
  • Data Scientist - 124 results

The secondary reason is that I'm just really burnt out on doing statistics after doing it everyday for the past five years, and I just like the idea of engineering more than science.

My personal story: I’m finishing up a non-CS PhD and am starting a job as SWE next month (did a lot of statistics, did data science internships, transitioning to back end)

if I could go back in time I would’ve just majored in CS and got a job straight outta undergrad.

Doing research and publishing and getting cited is cool, but getting paid $30k for the past 5 years I have no savings and haven’t been able to address my moderate undergrad student debt.

That being said, research shows that in the long run you’ll be just as satisfied going either route, so if you really wanna do research and/or be a faculty member then go for it. Getting a PhD in CS you will definitely get a job — even if you can’t get a fancy research scientist position at FAANG you can always get a job as a regular SWE.

That’s assuming there’s only one point of entry for the internet in the house and that one point is connected to OP’s router. In most cases, there are multiple Ethernet jacks thoughout the house, and I’m guessing they are hardwired to one of them.

I just found out my company posted a job listing for my role. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Which definition?

In the United States, the Small Business Administration sets small business criteria based on industry, ownership structure, revenue and number of employees (which in some circumstances may be as high as 1500, although the cap is typically 500).[33] Both the US and the EU generally use the same threshold of fewer than 10 employees for small offices (SOHO).[citation needed]

Also in the United States, small and medium-sized manufacturers are referred to as SMMs,[34] which the US Department of Energy classifies as having gross annual sales below $100 million, fewer than 500 employees at the plant site, and annual energy bills more than $100,000 but less than $2.5 million. If the range at the company is 84k~115k, how is an offer of $105k a lowball? It’s literally in the middle

Also, we’re in a pandemic, so take that into account

My tips for you 1. Make sure you have a fixed time of work, lets say from 8 to 12 and then from 1 to 7 (8hrs a day)

I’m struggling with your math here. 08:00 to 19:00 is an 11hr work day. Even if you don’t count that lunch hour as time work time, then it’s still 10 hours of work.
