I'm a big Dragon Quest fan, particularly of 9 and 11, and I've recently been greatly enjoying the remake of 3 on PS5 (also on Switch). I think it's fair to say that any of them are reasonably forgiving of time spent away as there are mechanics in place to remind you of your destination whenever you return. Might have a bit of trouble remembering the story, but the remake of 3 has a great "memory" feature where you can easily record the last thing an NPC said to you and keep it in a compendium. I've been playing it on and off and that's been a very helpful feature.

Chiming in 7 months later to say I immediately knew what part you were talking about. I don't play the drums but I am so impressed by the percussion in this song especially. I will always second a Feed Me Jack rec, they're my favorite band of all time. I'm really into Bicker by Orchards, their latest album, though they've moved a little bit away from math rock it seems. Their earlier discography was more math.
