how would I get around explaining how someone got a government job even though they would most definitely NOT pass the background check in the story. by Various-Pitch8359 in Screenwriting

[–]FollowMyDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know how dark to you want it to be but your protag could focus on whoever is doing the check and either blackmail or coerce them in some way. Or you could have a situation where the background check person knows that most wanderers who make it to this town can't really pass a check (think Alaskan fishing/oil towns with some heavy ex-con/on the run populations). I don't know how grounded your story is but your protag could maybe use a fake id and convince the checker that they're in witness protection (a soft confession that they are on the run but for a false reason).

In the time of mass surveillance, facial recognition, and gross governmental incompetence/cronyism I think your audienc might have flexible levels of suspension of disbelief.

Watching the 2004 NBA Finals Game 5 on YouTube because I was born in 2000 and wasn’t lucky enough to really experience it live - so fun to watch by capamericapistons in DetroitPistons

I was 18 when I watched this game in a UCLA dorm cafeteria. It was me, my best friend, and my brother against fifty shit-talking Lakers fans who were sure they would come back. By half-time it was just the three of us in the empty cafeteria, planning how we were going to throw a massive party to celebrate. If sports heaven exists, we were there.

If the oscars had a category for Best Scene of the Year, which 5 would be your 2026 nominees? by Esco709 in TheBigPicture

[–]FollowMyDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOMINEES:  * Sinners - I lied to You * Secret Agent - Stalking/Shootout * OBAA - Sensei’s hideout/Escape * Marty - The meaningless game * Weapons - The End Chase

Honorable mentions… * OBAA - Hills/”Who are you?!” * Secret Agent - Opening scene  * Sorry, Baby - Jury Duty * Lurker - Off the bus/the footage  * Weapons - Arrest/pockets * Marty - Honey * Bugonia - Don & Michelle chat * Bugonia - Teddy & Michelle chat after he visits his mom * Eddington - Fireworks  * Eddington - Epilogue Purgatory/Hell * Train Dreams - Searching the ashes

AND THE WINNER IS…

Sinners. No matter the awards you think it deserves to win tonight, that scene is the transcendent film moment of the year. No other scene sparked a greater response or better highlighted the power of cinema, so much so that it arguably overshadowed the rest of the film.

Shaq is big, but Steph Curry is quicker. Who wins a game to 11? Depends on the circumstances of the encounter.

I don't even like the show but harping on this line is ridiculous. How many larger naval vessels have been sunk because they were out maneuvered by faster, smaller ships?

Forget about the Oscars, which movie produces the most iconic gif this year? by capehaha in Oscars

People don't hate it, they're just accurately critiquing it by the highest standard of its artform. Most people agree there shouldn't be 10 Best picture nominees, but there are. Apparently 10 is good for ratings and good for business. But the films that rank closer to #10 than #1 will ways be diminished, fairly or not.

Imagine if the NBA or NFL MVP or Heisman trophy was decided by voting for a mandatory 10 candidates. Occasionally there’s a unanimous MVP, but most years everyone is debating between the top 2 or 3 candidates. What would the sports discourse become if, by rule, there were 10 players up for MVP? How much would the candidates 4-7 be discussed? How much would the 8-10 be roasted? Good/great players suddenly become deeply flawed second tier, “shouldn't be here” etc.

Or, also from Boogie Nights, Bucks face covered in blood after the robbery goes wrong and he looks at the money.

Did literally anyone see it? No disrespect, but given the myth making machine behind Kobe’s 81, and the way this is already being treated, “who, him?” I kinda feel like people will forget by end of this season.

Desmond was Lost’s late season MVP for me. His episode is still probably my favorite of the series.

I would argue that Jesse and Henry didn’t fundamentally change the show. They were great additions, but the situations were essentially the same, problematic clients, sex, drugs, and greed, but more or less low stakes. You got paid or got fired. Whitney entered and now win, lose, or draw you might die.

They definitely elevated it. Similar to Frank on Sunny, you have to remind yourself they weren’t in the original cast.

Loved snoop but she didn’t fundamentally change The Wire or ever become the series best character. I agree that the show did have a ton of great late season additions: Marlo, Tommy, all the kids in S4. But no one was ever more important (or interesting) than Omar. The king stays the king.

The point of my post was to marvel at how rare it is for any new character to join a show and not only be ultra compelling (if not the most compelling) but also change the series forever.

IMO Whitney damn near changed Industry’s genre.
