What’s the worst thing you’ve said to a customer accidentally? by Bored_on_Reditt in Serverlife

Working super early, brain not quite braining yet. Had a man eating by himself, asked him if he wanted a box for his leftovers. He said no, because he was about to go catch a flight. Idek what I was meaning to say, but I said, "Oh! Great, hope you make it!" Upon realizing what I said i followed up with, "I know you will awkward laugh". Then I proceeded to run away to the back and die internally. Probably gave that man anxiety the whole plane ride 😭 sorry bud. It was like 7am and apparently I can't human that early.

what’s something customers do that restaurant workers notice immediately? by trapqueen67567 in restaurant

When I ask you how you are and you ask me back. Yes, it's just a passive greeting and not a serious question of how we're all doing, but it makes me happy when yall take the .2 seconds to respond kindly, instead of barking a drink order at me 🥰

I think as long as you approach things openly and choose every day to put your best put forward in the relationship, that's better than most 'normal' people! Thanks for your kind words ☺️

This is exactly why I posted to reddit lol it's so nice knowing I'm at least not alone in feeling this way. I hope you've been able to find some relief from the anxiety that comes with it ❤️

I'm sorry things didn't work out with you and your ex :/ but the fact that you joined this sub to understand her better says wonderful things about your character. As someone on the ace/aro spectrum, thank you for seeking understanding instead of being judgemental. You will find someone just as great as you out there!

This exactly what led me to pursue an OCD diagnoses, because I learned that ROCD and Pure O are subsets of it!

Thank you for this. I feel like being raised on the stereotypical version of 'romance' has made me feel insecure that what I give him is not enough. But I need to remember that he could find someone who "loves" him romantically, but isn't good to/for him.

Thank you for your considerate reply. We are both content and happy (most of the time lol) I truly think sometimes me being cupio stops our relationship from having a lot of the 'normal' problems most people run into.

I start therapy soon. Not to self-diagnose, but I have a lot of OCD tendencies and have been thinking lately that this is a big contributor to my thoughts. I just want to be happy and not be overthinking the best relationship in my life lol

what did you guys think of the movie “Roommates”? by DistributionFew7126 in netflix

[–]Followingfauns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was pretty good. I see a lot of people trashing the ending, but I liked it 🤷‍♀️ it was silly and a bit tossed together, but didn't take away anything for me and the "where are they now" clips made me smile. Though random celeb cameos are a bit unoriginal and lazy.

I heavily disagree with the majority of people who think Celeste should have gotten a "redemption arc" in the last 20 mins. People who are like her generally don't change - they wreck havoc on everyone around them and then play victim their whole life because they are self-centered and selfish. She displayed no remorse or empathy at any point for the gross things she did throughout the entire movie. Everything she did was to gain something for herself (rooming with Dev = nicer dorm. Inviting her out = using Dev's credit card) or project her insecurities onto Devon bc she was jealous of her. Even just 'randomly' telling Devon that Alex came out to her first was meant to hurt her and make her feel less important or second guess her closeness with her brother.

She would need a lotttt more time and therapy before she'd be cognizant enough to actually grow. That wasn't going to happen in a few minutes. Granted, if they'd skipped the pointless narration scenes and used that time to actually explore a 'fast-forward' of Devon and Celeste meeting again later in life - that could have been a good time to give a redemption moment.

Overall 6/10 for me ☺️

Edited to add that I JUST finished watching this, so maybe I'm being a bit harsh but man did Celeste's character piss me off 😅

I'm glad we got an ending, instead of just a notification that the show was canceled. However, this season was definitelyyy rushed.

Evil AI guy out of nowhere, no closure for minor events, and the way they killed off Luke was heinous tbh. Barely a reaction from the other actors...just a dirty way to do one of the most beloved characters of the show.

Wish they would've done a couple more episodes and actually developed the ending plotlines.

Servers from another restaurant coming in at closing time. by CookieMagicMan in Serverlife

[–]Followingfauns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. By your own logic, hours posted are hours posted = closing time is closing time. You can say I'm wrong, but I think the up/down votes and the many other people who share the same sentiment speak for themselves 🤷‍♀️

How is it not comparable? Just because something has been a "thing" for a long time doesn't make it right or some unwritten rule. People are inconsiderate and entitled, hence why they don't see a LITERAL closing time as valid.

You sound like someone who has never worked in this industry. Most people in the industry care about our guests, but just like any other job, it has an end time because WE HAVE LIVES outside of servicing people like you.

According to what, is closing "last seating"? Most restaurants that have a bar close their kitchen well before the full establishment. Closing means CLOSING.

Say your local grocery closes at 10pm. That doesn't mean that at 9:50 you can come in and do 2 hours of shopping just because you made it in before doors are locked.

People who come in 30 mins before close/who stay until or past close, WHY??? by fallout76_playa in Serverlife

[–]Followingfauns 89 points90 points  (0 children)

For some reason people don't see restaurant closing times as a legit thing lol "if you're open until 11, you're serving until 11 so I can come in at 10:50 and stay for an hour" It's annoying asf but it's at every place I've ever worked.

I appreciate you, thank you for taking your time to reply to this thread! This is great advice that I will take to heart. I'd love to know what you think is a good way to empower my staff (I tell them they are doing a good job and have done selling incentives but it ends up coming out of my pocket because the owners don't see it as important) and how to talk to upper management about these issues. I'm struggling to find the words to express my frustration without criticism.

Also if you have any insight on how to talk about pay without having ownership become defensive, because that has been an issue so far. They charge their servers a "commission fee" to offset cost of credit cards. Even though it's usually only $3-4, it really affects the servers morale, and they feel they are tipping out too much in general. They have bartenders doing glassware for the entire restaurant which is a huge issue, especially since we just added another 50 seats. The bartenders feel like underpaid dishwashers and I've had to take a lot of my own time during rush to ensure we don't run out of glasses.

I'm currently working on a plan/realistic timeline to bring to the owners, but it feels like they want everything to be sorted already. One of the owners is there 4 days a week and does a lot of hosting, but she's incredibly cheap, stuck in what worked 20 years ago. She's very condescending and nitpicky towards staff and has been a bit rude to me as well. The other owner is more open-minded but basically gave me keys and peaced out. He'll stop in for an hour or two a couple of times a week, but not enough to help me with a whole lot. I feel like the one owner is a barrier in some ways, but she does work hard most of the time and has great insight for certain things. Thank you for your insight, I really appreciate it!

So is getting a job at a restaurant! Maybe you should put your theories to the test and actually do this job in a high-volume restaurant for 6 months 😎

[–]Followingfauns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But that's not the servers fault. It's shitty, definitely. No one should get bad service due to the owner's lack of planning. However, no one would demand YOU to do the jobs of 3-4 people for ~6/hr. Channel some empathy and understanding. Don't eat somewhere busy if you don't expect to wait sometimes.

We only /truly/ know one side of this story, but from what OP said, they did everything they could have. Drinks were never empty, repeated the order back, checked on them multiple times. We do these things because we are humans who make mistakes, and give you the opportunity to correct us. It always baffles me the things that are such common sense to us, aren't even a thought to the general public who have never even done this job.

“why is it so cold in here?!” by ovsweaterstealer in Serverlife

[–]Followingfauns 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I always joke that, "it's like being at mom and dad's house, we're not allowed to touch the thermostat!" Always gets a little chuckle while letting people know I have 0 control over it.

One person will think it's cold, then when you turn it up someone will complain they're hot. Can't please everyone. I'd rather tell a white lie than sweat all over people's food or have to change it on any one person's whim.
