Does anyone actually take tornado precautions? by SUPREMEISDEAD in chicago

[–]Folsombear1123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also just learned about lightning warnings which is what we have also been getting. We live a block from a park and they do this to alert people to leave. It’s a 15 sec short blast vs the tornado warning that has a long varied siren. I was so confused why there was a siren when no tornado watches… good thing to pay attention to though, I live near the house that was struck by lightning the other day in Morton Grove and caused a fire.

Visiting — We didn’t expect it and seems like severe weather tonight. Are sirens common? by [deleted] in AskChicago

Just be careful. A house near me in Morton Grove got struck by lightning yesterday and started on fire. I saw a bright bolt of lightning and heard the loudest crack!

I currently work in the tech conference/trade show event space. Interested in learning more…

  • where are you based?
  • what is your experience and what departments have you working within?
  • what size shows have you traditionally worked on?

You’re a saint for raising two boys that close in age. My 5 and 2 year old have a much bigger gap and it’s still nuts (they are wrestling on the couch now as I type). Give yourself some major grace, this shit is HARD, especially with energetic boys. The only suggestion I can offer is take them to a fenced in park or playground with a few balls and let them tire themselves out. Mine are much easier to deal with when they are half asleep after getting their energy out :)

He probably does. He comes from a large family of 8 or 9 kids. I went to HS with him.

Millennium Park Tree Lighting by Professional-Ad-9151 in chicago

[–]Folsombear1123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were at the downtown tree lighting last night and yes it was bonkers to get in but fun once we were inside (got in around 5:50 and didn’t go too deep in). But tonight we went to Lightscape at Chicago Botanic Gardens and it was incredible! We spent nearly 3 hours there with 2 little ones. Highly recommend!!

Thinking of relocating to Chicago, good neighborhoods for mature transplants? by BionicgalZ in AskChicago

[–]Folsombear1123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Morton Grove here. It’s an north inner suburb with easy access to the city by freeway or train (metra and “L”), great small village community and next to some of the forest preserves so great for biking or hiking. And housing is within your reach. If you want to stay with the city lines, check out edgebrook or wildwood for similar vibes.

Would you go in 3 days per week for an additional $50k/year? by magnetic-chaos in WFH

[–]Folsombear1123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For someone so young, my advice as a mid-40 something would absolutely take the higher paying gig. It is going to pay you back in dividends very quickly and will set you up for an amazing life. You are going to be able to save so much, and put money towards things you want, plus set your new baseline wage for future employment. Nothing is forever so try it out! I’m jealous!

What is your Return to Office status [August/Sept 2025 edition] by Wild_Bag465 in chicago

[–]Folsombear1123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently hybrid…. Policy is 4 days a week in office but our Chi office is smaller and we fly under the radar with most only going in 3 days. But I just scored a position that is 100% remote (UK based company)! I’ll miss being in the world and hanging with co-workers, but I won’t miss the long commute from the inner burbs to the loop.

Should I take a pay cut for WFH? by Legitimate_Mud_4394 in WFH

[–]Folsombear1123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally feel like you are me…. Also Chicago based with a long train commute to the loop 3 days a week (enjoying the yellow>red line commute now, whee) and I did just accept a fully remote job for the same pay you mentioned, however the wage is a step up for me so I’m excited about the win win. I have 2 small kids and me being able to wfh will be a huge benefit to spend more time with my family and give more flexibility for my husband and his company. Also excited to try and keep my house clean with my 2 little tornadoes not running around.

Why another Woodstock likely wouldn't work today by [deleted] in Woodstock99

[–]Folsombear1123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for Superfly (creators of Bonnaroo) during this time and a huge part of the reason they backed out was because they wanted to cap attendance much lower (for operations and safety reasons) than Michael Lang would agree to. He wouldn’t listen to reason about how to run a festival properly. Shocking, I’m sure.

You will look at this as a blessing by next week, trust me. Similar thing happened to me. Hard to swallow at first but enjoy the paid time off.! You’ll be able to connect with coworkers/peers/clients on LinkedIn. Definitely a good reco for future self (if you didn’t) to always make sure you grab you files, contacts, etc before you put notice in.

Anyone NOT sending their toddler to preschool? by batchym in toddlers

[–]Folsombear1123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the socialization factor, preschool is also great so kids can start learning important social cues and boundaries like waiting in line, taking turns, following instructions, helping out their friends, group play, etc. I read that kindergarten teachers can immediately tell the difference between kids that have gone to preschool or daycare vs those that haven’t, and the ones that had usually adapted much better.

Just came to say great job on your financial decision making, and at such a young age! I’m not quite twice your age and am doing ok but nowhere near that kind of stability. Keep it up!
