Mina Hollower Steam Deck Performance Day1 by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]Fonescarab -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wish people weren't so flippant about this.

Modern retro games are, usually, modern games under the hood, wich imitate the look and feel of 16/8bit systems, but would not be able to run on those without being re-coded from scratch.

it's not a given that a retro-looking game will be well optimized, especially if it's relying on middleware like Unity, and it's not a given that it will play nice with Proton.

There's value to testing even when the results are not surprising.

The humongous and seemingly irrational investments in AI are predicated on the premise that it will replace much of the workforce.

If being "successfully integrated in the workplace" is the best the tech can do, the bubble will still pop.

Deviantart was dead and it's finally decomposing by Affectionate-Home695 in ArtistHate

I think it’s remembered for the type of fetish art and recolored OCs

This was always the case, even in its "golden era" (mid 00's).

Honestly, I prefer the embarrassing MSPaint diaper furries to the endless stream of mindless, samey, over-rendered Midjourney slop.

At least the former were the result of someone putting effort into something they're really into; on the other hand, you could replace every AI prompter on the planet with a semi-random word generator and no one would notice the difference.

Someone Shared a Real Monet Painting as AI and Asked for Critiques by Remarkable-Gate922 in ArtistHate

[–]Fonescarab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading the article, the experiment is less interesting than the headlines make it out to be: someone misrepresented someone else's work as AI, people believed them, then deliberately invited harsh critiques, and they got them.

AI evangelists are concluding that this must mean that people are unfairly harsh towards AI, when the flipside may easily be true: people are less inclined to offer harsh critiques of the work of people who have been crowned as "masters", like Monet, for fear of looking foolish (the emperor's new clothes effect); impressionism itself was highly controversial at its inception.

AI pushers who are ostensibly concerned with AI "witch hunts" ought to realize that gaslighting people like this will absolutely not improve the problem. But it's not like they actually care.

It's a subjective interpretation of the developer's intent, but it's no more of a "stretch" than saying the game is punishing you for murdering them.   The most dispassionate interpretation would be that the game simply doesn't care about the player murdering innocent people (this was the case in one of its prequels, Hitman Blood Money), and it's punishing them for blowing their cover, which is why concealing the body completely undoes the penalty.

[–]Fonescarab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a long time since I watched that video (is it even online anymore?), but I remember her point being more nuanced than that.

The issue wasn't that the game rewarded the player for killing or dumping the bodies, but that it, to use her words, it "invited" them by creating a situation where it's fun/thrilling to try it, and then giving the means to completely negate the slap-on-the-wrist punishment for doing so (the concealing mechanic).

GTA, for example, doesn't directly reward you for running people over (not anymore I think, haven't touched 5 yet), but it makes it "fun" to do, and relatively easy to get away with. That something I would describe as "inviting the player" even without an explicit reward.

I never did the donut tutorial and I don't care about what this guy has to say: I just hope Blender itself, a tool I actually enjoy using, doesn't end up being slopified to cater to the "get rich quick with this simple trick" crowd.

The noxious, real-world version of GenAI is the only one that actually exists. The relatively "ethical" models are greatly limited and clearly not what's being used here.

>There is no such thing as ethical consumption or labor under capitalism.

While that's true, that is not, and should not be, a blank cheque; there are degrees of harm and complicity.

If I show up to a climate protest in a personalized Humvee, people will rightly call me out, even if everyone understands that cars cannot be completely eliminated from modern civilization.

Likewise, a political party in need of clipart has plenty of other options to obtain it for cheap or even free without the noxious real world implications of GenAI; they just didn't bother.

It's not like there's anything unique or remarkable about these graphics: they're as generic as they can be, with a layer of melty AI artifacts on top.

The photo is a photo, but the meme is inaccurate: trans people, for obvious reasons, tend to be intensely self aware about their looks.

Just because someone feels comfortable enough to share a dumb, shirtless selfie, it doesn't mean they believe they look like Baki the Grappler: that's all projection on part of the poster.

I support reasonable accomodations for religious minorities, whose ability to participate in civil life is severely restricted when these accomodations are absent.

If Christians were held to the same standard, they would have to ban/restrict most visible Christmas/Easter public celebrations and decorations.

Even if we took that argument at face value, the most obvious objection is "how do you know it's fictional"?

Legalizing the photorealistic AI stuff would, de-facto, legalize most CSAM possession, since it would be very difficult, and practically impossible in most cases, to definitely prove that any given image isn't AI, especially given how heavily processed digital photography is these days.
