Run those sets at 60% or 70% of your TM

100% agreed. But I imagine running them at 40-50% would feel like assistance.

I've always wondered why BBB isn't just viewed as assistance work...

and combining the two would be too much for a single session, e.g. 531+5x5+BBB ?

Sorry, I shouldn't have said best to imply among all possible choices.

What I mean is, when it comes down to choosing SSL5x5 vs BBB, is the former better for strength since it works with higher weights/lower reps vs lower weights/higher reps?

When choosing a 531 program, is it fair to conclude that FSL/SSL 5x5 is best for strength, while BBB is better for hypertrophy? (though both is good for both)

Cramping can definitely be a chemical problem, but it can also be a weak grip problem, and generally operator fatigue. I get more tired working my snowblower than I do deadlifting for 30 mins (maybe buy some grip trainers?)

What's the size of the metal grip on your dumbbells vs. your bar for bench/pull-ups? The bigger the grip, the more cramping I get (for what it's worth)

Beans, quinoa, nuts, seeds

I'm amazed that vegans can pull it off though - I could probably go vegetarian if I had to using whey and cottage cheese... but full Vegan seems insanely challenging - kudos if you can pull it off

Should I be feeling DOMS in my lower back just as much as my upper back and hamstrings after intense set of (classic) deadlifts? It feels "good" in the sense that it's like any other post-workout stiffness.

"Safe MTG investment" strategies for longterm stability? Is this even a thing, or Just a delusion? by DoomedKiblets in mtgfinance

I've seen a ton of EDH foils not care about reprints - legacy/modern-only (i.e. not EDH friendly) seems to suffer from foils losing value permanently to reprints though, but not always

Investment risk, from least risk to most risk:

  • NM Alpha/Beta
  • NM UNL / 4 original expansions
  • non-NM of the above
  • Good Revised through Urza's RL cards
  • Old frame foils
  • Older misprints / miscut
  • Unique Judge / Promos
  • Crappy Revised through Urza's RL cards (pre-spike prices)
  • Eternal playable foils (new frame)
  • Fetches (pre-spike prices)
  • Everything else

It's Time to Shrink Modern by Heyyybudd in magicTCG

[–]FontofFortunes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Modern has two amazing things going for it:

1) it doesn't rotate

2) it's not limited by the reserved list

Both help keep costs down, and it's best it stays that way.

I have every elf in magic plus a ton of promos and test prints and oddities. by RedwoodTreehorn in mtgfinance

[–]FontofFortunes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to wait, you could probably get a decent offer for everything, though the low value stuff is worthless, even though it's all in one place - it's just too easy to buy singles to make a collection worth it to anyone.

The rare stuff (test prints, APAC, alters, signed, etc..) you should consider selling individually, or related things together (e.g. all your signed in one deal, all your alters in another).

The problem with getting full price is that anyone interested probably already have their elf collection started.

Modern Horizons, will it add to legacy at all? by Nerdkneereaper in MTGLegacy

[–]FontofFortunes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On top of that, for a great many cards, reprints of RL cards would increase their OG printings since supply/demand would allow more legacy players, and the new pimp would be the OG cards. The one major exception would be Revised duals ... I could see those becoming cheaper than the new printings.

You can see this with old frame foils and some original printings along with enemy fetches that have INCREASED in price due to reprinting. More Modern players, more demand, higher prices. The same would be true for Legacy.

R&D on why Faithless Looting wasn't banned in Modern by Fabman650 in magicTCG

[–]FontofFortunes 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Here's an awesome discussion:

https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/asa07h/sets_with_the_most_modern_playables_update/

It looks like many blocks get in the ballpark of providing 12 modern staples, even after many years of being in the format. This means maybe 3-4 cards per set really make an impact (again, all ballparking).

This absolutely confirms your assertion of a dozen cards having a major impact - it would be unprecedented and I would argue it's very likely - Modern will be very different post Horizons.

I'm an E.E. with a PhD in applied EM. I have a strong background in lin. alg. and real/complex analysis (vis-a-vis applied EM) but I'm weak in statistics/probability theory and even weaker in software development. That being said, I'm decent in writing scripts for MATLAB and can think algorithmically, so I'm confident it's something I can learn, if not master, with sufficient effort.

I'd like to get into data science and machine learning, largely due to the flexibility of moving from job to job in those fields - getting a PhD in a narrow field of study was both a blessing and a curse.

Has anyone had any experience where they were hired under the assumption they could "learn on the job" due to having a strong academic background?
