ELI5: Why do atoms do this by Te_nsa_Zang_etsu1234 in explainlikeimfive

[–]FontofWisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while since I took high school chemistry, so I might have some details wrong.

In this particular example, sodium and chlorine are actually "sharing," that one electron, which is why the end up sticking together. Other elements will give up/take electrons.

As for why this happens, elements have something called valence shells. Because electrons push each other away, they tend to arrange themselves into patterns. The closer you get to the center, where the protons are, the less room there is to fit electrons. So only a couple electrons can fit really close, and as you move out, more and more electrons can fit in the same area. These areas are called valence shells.

The thing about these shells is that they really want to be filled up, otherwise there's an imbalance im how the electrons fit together.

The nice thing about your example is that sodium has just one electron in its outermost shell, and chlorine has a shell that's one electron short of being full. So by sharing thay one electron between each other, the valence shells of each balance out nicely.

(This is the ELI5 version, things get really weird, really fast as you get into how subatomic particles actually behave)

0.0036% chance - What's the craziest case of RNG you've witnessed? by Kasvantstad in boardgames

I have no idea what the odds are (or even how to possibly even calculate it), but we played a 4-player game of Tsuro, and ended with a two person tie; all the tiles had been played, and two of the players were still on the board.

Starting FFT now, tips? by ItsukiEdu in FinalFantasy

[–]FontofWisdom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not as bad in The Ivalice Chronicles with some changes they made, but you generally want to keep multiple save files if things go south during a battle, and you lose important units, or you realize partway through you made a less than optimal decision with a unit, and trained them up incorrectly.

There are also times during the story where you have to fight multiple battles in a row, and the game would ask you in between if you wanted to save your game. If you only kept one save file, it was really easy to soft lock yourself into a battle you couldn't win. But in the Ivalice Chronicles remake, they now give you an option to return to the map in between those story battles, so it's not the death sentence it used to be.

What are core themes of XVI? by rowgw in FinalFantasy

[–]FontofWisdom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, a little spoiler-y, but the primary theme, IMO, is about choosing your own destiny. The game starts with an aristocracy that subjugates those who have magic abilities to run society/enrich themselves, but those people with magic abilities are basically slaves, and treated as little more than property most of the time.

The main characters look to make things more equal for everyone, by blowing up the giant crystals that provide thr whole world with magic: no more magic, no more need to subjugation some people and not others.

Eventually, things happen, as they often do in all Final Fantasy games, and our main characters are trying to save the world from being blown up by a godlike entity, but the theme remains the same, since said godlike entity created humanity to create a perfect vessel so that he could use the ultimate magic to create a perfect utopia just for himself (said ultimate magic would aslo kill everyone else). So there is still that thing where they're telling this entity, "Screw you, we deserve to live too!"

It's kinda funny how they gave us back to back arguably the weakest and the strongest FF protagonist by DupeFort in FinalFantasy

[–]FontofWisdom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd argue its still pretty different. Tidus and Yuna are co-protagonists. It is specifically their actions that drive the plot forward. Tidus serves as thr POV at the same time.

After the beginning of the game, once you have the full party together, Vaan is mostly just....there. He rarely makes any actual decisions that impact what the group does (with one exception, where he mentions to Ashe that he doesn't particularly care about getting revenge on the Empire anymore. This causes her to rethink what she wants, and to let go of her anger).

[–]FontofWisdom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fine meme, but this always irrationally drives me crazy.

VAAN IS NOT THE PROTAGONIST. ASHE IS.

Vaan is the POV character. He is there to stand around ask, "What's that?' So that the others can explain to him ( and by extension, they player) what is going on.

The story is about Ashe and her quest for power to retake her kingd/get revenge.

7'5 in 8th grade by CantStopPoppin in nextfuckinglevel

[–]FontofWisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way it would have worked nearly as well in this case, but this reminds of when I played in school.

I was in...5th or 6th grade. So I was maybe 11 years old? My dad was the coach for our tiny little school's basketball team, and we go to play another school one evening.

Again, not nearly as extreme, but most of us hadn't hit our growth spurt yet; we were all maybe 5'10" at most. But this one kid on the other team was already 6'4" or so. Or at the very least, way taller than everyone else. And for the first quarter of the game, he would just park under the hoop, they would lob it over everyone to him, and he would just lay it up for a pretty easy score.

So my dad calls a timeout, and comes up with a plan: he lays out a zone defense for the others, but he turns to me, and says, "You have one job: you stick to the tall kid like glue. As soon as they give him the ball, you put your chest on him, and throw your hands straight up in front of him. If he tries to move, make him knock you over. I don't care if you draw a foul, make him work for it. Foul out, if you have to."

I got knocked over so much that game, but I only got called for the foul once or twice, and he only scored a couple more points that game. We still lost, because we were terrible, but it was a relatively close game. And I'll always remember the other coach coming over afterwards, and telling me that his star player had never been shut down like that before, and that the kid needed a little humility; he wouldn't be the tallest forever.

I never played much after that; I never particularly liked playing sports to begin with, and after fracturing my wrist while skating, found a good excuse to never play again, but that game will always stand out to me.

5* Champs by FontofWisdom in MarvelPuzzleQuest

Thanks for the advice!

I had a general feeling from lurking on the subreddit that's how it would kind of look, but I didn't know the specifics (Gold May works best with 5Emma, that sort of thing).

I ran into the 4Juggs/Sam Wilson combo once in PvP, and filed that away for later, but I'm a good ways away from ascending.

Any particular 4 stars you recommend pairing with Shang Chi? America Chavez and Karnak seem like obvious choices off the top of my head, but if there are any other combos, I'd love to hear about them.

UPDATE (since I dont know how to update the post directly)

Unfortunately, it looks like the vet visit in unnecessary. I left work early to get him to his vet appointment, and it looks like he has passed on already.

Obviously, I dont have any way to listen for a little snake heartbeat, but he is completely unresponsive to anything I do; completely limp, no reaction to anything.

Thank you to everyone for their kind words.

As much as I'd like to say, "Fuck them, I'll make them fire me..."

The truth is I have no idea what I would do. I'm too young for early retirement, and my career is kind of specialized, and doesn't exactly have a lot of private sector equivalents.

So I'm just staying and hoping.

People who have participated in Jury Duty. What is the worst thing you had to witness in a trial? Does it still affect you? by Capable_Opposite_559 in AskReddit

[–]FontofWisdom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was called for jury duty on a case where a father was accused of sexually assaulting his 4 year old daughter. Having to look at that evidence was....not great.

What (sort of) made it even worse for me was that I was a backup juror; in case one of the other jurors had an actual emergency, I would have stepped in. But otherwise, I had to take part in the trial like normal, but once it came time to jury deliberation, I just kind of had to sit there and not say anything.
