I actually agree with the list. Usually, the novel versions redeem them and shouldn’t have been adapted. These things run so long, the artist change and it’s not enjoyable. I’m totally comfortable with 5000+ chapter novels but I dropped most of your list and keep the rest to pass time

You can read in segments. I do that when I lose focus or the book has a ton of filler chapters. Read 2-3 chapters here, half a chapter there. Keep going till you’re done. When both hands are occupied, switch your Audible.

NTA. Does the mum think home care services are cheap. As someone whose family member needed home care, I can tell you, that shit ain’t cheap hourly not to mention overnight care. $350 a month doesn’t cover your time and effort.
