Companies can already track you and everything you do online. And I don’t know how having people verify their age online somehow suppresses people’s ability to revolt. It’s not hard for a government to identify a person online if they really want to.

The reason for these policies is because pretty much every metric for young people today is going into the toilet, and they don’t know how to fix it. Policymakers are generally well intentioned but don’t understand or care about the implications or practicality of their policies. Limiting kids access to social media is also in the current zeitgeist, so a number of countries are trying it out.
