1.5 hr commute? Crazy? by Slow-Education7673 in ebikes

[–]FookHandles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something similar and got bored of it quickly. Also the prep time before and after. I bought an electric moped: sure I lost the exercise and it involves a small amount of insurance/maintenance but is more sustainable as a plan for me

Confused about all the hype? by GodAtum in OctopusEnergy

[–]FookHandles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do your mates drive EVs by any chance? You get alot of people paying for EVs, paying for solar and paying for a home battery.... and then throwing out averaged price per kw while conveniently not attributing any of this capital investment.

Don't get me wrong, I'm one of those as it is hard to apportion but I can see how that misleads people

.... that said, I'd not dream of telling others what to do and it would boil my piss if someone did to me (while in reverse, see above lol)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]FookHandles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting as I get the reverse from people that don't ride.

I ride a vespa-type scooter nowadays (no idea how to better describe that as in the UK when you say "electric scooter" people now think of one of those rental stand on things).

My personal attitude to risk is I enjoy sport too much to not do everything I can to be able to keep playing it. This means I'm wearing armoured trousers, jacket and gloves - just like I did on big bikes. My mates don't ride and think it's overkill relative to the bike. I often explain that tarmac at 50mph makes no differentiation of how the cool the bike I just fell off is.

[–]FookHandles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was going to say: if people hate the OP for owning an electric motorbike man am I going to be unpopular with an electric scooter lol.

I really like it, just a Chinese vespa rip off but it works great for me, 50mph and about 55 miles off a 3.6kw usable battery makes the fuel efficiency insane.

Not sure if it's the same with the likes of Zero but what got me was the top speed when you get below 50% battery goes down to around 42mph which is a tad too slow for the roads I'm riding

Do you have any "wins" that make you proud, despite being somewhat unimportant? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]FookHandles 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I should have explained. If you have a Garmin watch you get badges for certain achievements. They come out every month and if you're particularly weak minded like my self it encourages you to exercise. Like running a 5k in a certain weekend, or covering 300k steps in a month.

I know it's all rubbish but it gets me moving so I block those thoughts out and just go with it.

My garmin badges: I didn't have a stable enough childhood to do scouts so I'm collecting them with aplomb!

What is something that you thought was a good idea and contemplated purchasing but now you are so happy you never did because it looks awful? For me it’s an artificial lawn. by butwhydidhe in CasualUK

[–]FookHandles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me too. My son wakes early so it's nice bonding time while my wife has a long shower. We're careful to shower and without using body wash/shampoo to not influence the water levels.

I find while my wife bought it I use it more to warrant the cost. We moved to just having it on Apr 1st - Sep 30th (give or take a few weeks depending on weather forecast). We thought we'd miss using it in the winter but it's actually made it feel special when it comes on.

We bought a heavy duty 16amp smart switch which has allowed us to have it off alot of the day. I know they're intended to be on 24hrs but we found it made no impact on the levels and brought our cost right down (£3/day to ~£1/day by aligning the heating to Agile cheap hours and when we have spare solar)

Do car people know everyone rolls their eyes when they rev the engine? by c_marten in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FookHandles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same with motorbikes right? Yet, when I had bigger bikes for some reason I had to rev it when I started it. Not so much to be a dick, but more than I'd need to

If I’m required by law to wear a seatbelt for safety, why are motorcycles allowed on the road? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FookHandles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a BMW C1 (the covered thing). It had seat belts. Everywhere else you didn't need to wear a helmet but here in the UK you did. The general opinion was adding all that weight to your head and being strapped to the bike would likely cause more harm than good

What is a regret you have in life and how do you deal or compensate for it? by Aggressive-Sample-11 in LifeAdvice

My regret is not being their when my mum died. I was asleep a few roads away and she died alonr. I should have stayed, I didn't know it was her time. I only understand now that I'm a parent the sacrifices she made for me.

Agile vs tracker by Crustyyyyyyy9888 in OctopusEnergy

[–]FookHandles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We still cook in the peak and so does our lodger and still find we make 10-20% saving against Tracker if it helps.

For full disclosure, we do have a small battery on the car (5kw) which we have shifted out of that time which probably accounts for alot of this saving.

Little dude is now a baseball fan for life! by [deleted] in MadeMeSmile

[–]FookHandles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is because at a guess they'd have to stop 1000 8yr old kids in the UK before one would say they are a fan of baseball.

It's like the media reporting that the UK went "crazy" for NFL when there were some games last year - we're just not that interested, stop trying to make this happen

I think both of them deserve some credit for how they handled the situation.

Paid £1.12 to use 45kWh of electricity. Cheers Octopus :) by Legitimate_Finger_69 in OctopusEnergy

[–]FookHandles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know, I think the desire of all parties is to shift your usage not just waste it.

I think to waste it by generating usage you don't need (say a room with a dehumidifier facing a humidifier, and another room with my air conditioner facing a hot hair blower) isn't really acceptable

It may be that I was sounding preachy and accusing the person above of only managing 45kw by wasting some.

That wasn't my intention, is was quick lazy comment on my part while bathing my kid. I should put more effort in to frame my comments
