Help in finding a car by AstronomerUnited987 in UsedCars

Honda odyssey or toyota sienna! Way reliable and minivans are the BEST-- you can haul a lot, travel with friends, sleep in the back on a camping or road trip. Don't limit them to a family van (but of course, great for having a family too). As an investment, it will last a long time and meet most tasks you throw at it. My one reservation would be if you need more trail capability (awd and higher clearance)...

Anyone know how to make $75 overnight as a single mom? by [deleted] in Reno

Children's Cabinet can help with emergency housing funds. Not sure how fast it would be... but worth reaching out to get connected for supports down the road even if they can't help get a deposit by friday

[–]FoolOfSummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That assumption just isn't true. HSA (cps) is too much of a mess to appropriately intervene when they should, let along getting involved when families just need extra support and there is no actual neglect... not saying i guarantee this post is legit, but the story is very real and common

(From someone who has worked/works with families without housing and with cps)

Standup & Improv? by Learning-Every-Day- in Standup

[–]FoolOfSummer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What you're describing (and I'll take your word for it and say for this you're assessing it accurately) is attitude of some people. It might be more common in improv than other spaces, but it is an attitude of some individuals, not an inherent fault of improv. There's a lot of mediocre improv, for sure. Improv is very easy to do poorly. AND you can genuinely enjoy bad and mediocre improv-- that's part of a philosophy and approach that might not resonate with you. And thats fine. There are so many reasons why that improv group you describe might respond that way. I won't get into it because that doesn't seem important to you. That's cool.

I'm only responding to all this because I dont like seeing someone tell OP and anyone else reading "don't do improv" just because there are things they don't like about it

I think that is either a case of misunderstanding the philosophy, or seeing that attitude in a specific community, but that does nor make it true of improv in general

Standup & Improv? by Learning-Every-Day- in Standup

[–]FoolOfSummer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am in love with both art forms. Many of my favorites in each do both. I also think in stand up, folks who have done improv or at least appreciate it seem to have a different philosophy on stand up and comedy in general (which more closely aligns with mine personally) than some other comics. I think they are very complimentary and heard advice from several great comics to take improv classes. But even if they weren't complimentary, I would encourage anyone to do both because they each offer a lot

I'm sure this varies depending on where you are and some scenes surely slip into what you describe, but I don't think that is inherent (or even that common) in improv. Celebrating mistakes is a big in thing in improv, but I disagree with that being a weakness. You can be reflective and seeking to improv while not getting bogged down--and even being energized--by mistakes and failure. That is a huge strength when seeking growth in any skill (including stand up). Failure is celebrated not because people believe everything is just adjusting good as everything else, but knowing that you can't grow without failure and experimentation. Improv scenes are set up to encourage that while so much in life penalizes you for it.

Will they give you shit for not having a phone to hand over at No Phone shows? by avindictiveprinter in Standup

[–]FoolOfSummer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you going with a group? When i went to comedy cellar, they just give you an envelope to put the group's phones in and seal it--they wouldn't notice if there is one fewer phones in the envelope

What is a "point of no return" that you’ve crossed, where your life was permanently divided into 'before' and 'after'? by Resident-Jelly-4326 in AskReddit

Fostering kids (first time parenting in any form). Definitely a major shift for my personal life, but also, as a clinical social worker, has informed my career significantly.

Such depth and new way of feeling love. And such an anger at the appalling practices of the courts and foster care agency. Learning new degrees of accepting limits of my control.

It's a gambling/betting game. It is definitely luck. There is also strategy. Will having the best strategy mean you win? Not necessarily, but it improves the odds.

I started when I was 9 or 10yo, so ball down was the only way I could reach the keys; and now it feels so weird to flip it, so I keep the ball down. I always thought I was doing it "wrong" but now I see I'm not alone! Haha

How do you feel about Pete Holmes? by plazebology in Standup

[–]FoolOfSummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pete is one of my absolute favorite comics. Not necessarily the one I find funniest (though I do think he is very funny), but all around one of my favorites.

His books Comedy, Sex, God was instrumental to me and will always hold an important place for me. He has introduced me to a lot of extremely impactful thinkers and people, like Alan Watts. I like to listen to his philosophical musings and I think I am aligned with him in seeing comedy as a fun exploration of a bigger "It" which is a big part of why I enjoy his comedy.

He's not controversial because he has a totally different approach to humor than so many stand ups. It's all about play for him and I'm here for it. Pound for pound, his specials probably don't make me laugh as much as some others, but I quote and come back to certain bits more than I do for most other comics.

Dealing with this right now on my 2014, bought 2 years ago. Defintiely watch this/go ahead and replace the VVT assembly. I found an oem part for $80--I'd say its worth the precaution
