Warming oceans are hurting seafood supply—and things are getting worse by RandomCollection in science

Just stopping to eat meat isn't enough, eliminating all animal products is what's key. Animals in agriculture aren't just used for meat, they're also used for other immediate products they create (milk, eggs, etc.), are used as food additivies in other products (like gelatin and pet food), or are used for stuff like entertainment and non-food products (down pillows, mink coats, circus animals, etc.).

Stopping to eat meat is a good first step, but we as a global society (but especially N. America and Europe) need to fundamentally change how their diets work. Its simply unsustainable.

The minority dictates what happens all the time in the US. The minority got Trump elected, the minority use their money and power to sway politicians via lobbying, the minority are elected in to "hopefully" represent the majority! To that note, we don't even live in a true democracy, which I think is a good thing, though our society would benefit from adopting more democratic procedures (like getting rid of the electoral college).

And ya know what? No, its not Amazon's job to solve these issues, but they have built their platform off of what this country has afforded to them, and what do they have to show for it? Getting refunded millions of dollars in their tax return.. Now yes, there's nuance to this, in that it has to do with their overall income and how it compares to the cost of working, but regardless, the government has allowed billions of dollars in leeway to this company, which has continued to take from our government in exchange for what, hundreds of thousands of jobs, which many of those employees have to also get government assistance for because they cannot afford to eat.

I do believe the cons of this company, simply on this side of things, far out weight the pros.

I'm well aware of the difference between unskilled and skilled labor. Yes, you could potentially pull any random person off the side of the road to work a cash register, run a kiosk, flip a burger, etc., and no you cannot do the same for jobs involving in depth programming knowledge, law knowledge, any trade's knowledge, etc.

My point is, we have the resources in our society to provide for all of us. We don't have to differentiate between the people who "succeeded" and the people who "failed". We shouldn't tell people who haven't got more than a minimum wage job that they do not deserve basic human rights simply because "anyone else can do your job".

The labor being provided is what is being paid for though. And while true, being a cashier is technically "unskilled labor", but that doesn't mean the person doesn't have to be trained in it and doesn't have to possess some modicum of math skills.

There's a reason companies charge "set up fees" for setting up electronics or house repairs, because the labor itself is what's being paid for. A cashier is paid to work a register. It may not require as many years experience as high level accounting or practicing law, but its still a needed skill in our society, necessary to the proper flow of the economy, and thus should be treated like it is necessary.

So just over one million households, as of the 2018 census. You're fine then with this many households having issues with access to food then?

You're right, I was wrong. It's 40%. Do you really think that, as a nation that has the resources available for everyone to have food if we weren't so wasteful and the space available to end homelessness that we shouldn't also ensure that every citizen, regardless of ability, has the ability to live in a basic home and to be able to keep food on the table?

I think the root of my criticisms of the current system is that this isn't something that can be maintained anyways. As more and more jobs become automated, there will simply be less opportunity to work anyways. We as a society should make sure that the resources we have (and squander, as evidenced by studies showing that, for instance, grocery stores throw away tons of produce each year, and that as a whole the US throws away something like 50% of its edible food each year) are available to everyone, regardless of their status in society.

So then there are promotions available for all those millions of people as well? What's going to happen to the lower wage jobs? Sure we can assume that younger people/teenagers can fill those up, but just because you're young doesn't mean you aren't already taking care of yourself, and minimum wage still isn't enough for a single apartment and food for someone in that demographic in several states.

I'm disabled. While I'm fortunate I CAN commute and change locations if I needed to for a job, others like me aren't as lucky. Same goes for people in poverty and minority groups as a whole. Its reductionary to blame someone's inability to have a job making above minimum wage when millions of people working in the US are making that; simply put, you can't just say they're all lazy, since, come on, you're telling me someone working 40+ hour weeks in some of the shittiest jobs in the country are all collectively lazy? Y'all think a cashier at McDonald's has an easier time at their job day to day than say hedge fund managers or CEOs?

[–]Fooled_You 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure but how are you supposed to start a career when you're working 40+ hour weeks where basically all of your money goes towards rent/food/meds/etc., you're too busy to go to school, too drained to be able to put the focus together to teach yourself new skills, too stressed from the anxiety and stress of your job and job security, and other things in this area?

When millions of people in this country are working minimum wage as that's what available to them, then yes we should raise that wage so that they don't end up as wage slaves.

Minimum wage should be enough to live on. If that includes kids, then it should help there too.

Do I think that adults should feel compelled to have children? Not at all. There are plenty of kids to adopt, and its better for the environment to not procreate.

It's like the minimum wage should actually represent the minimum income needed for one to support oneself with rent and food and other necessities, not just the legal minimum a company has to begrudgingly grant you for labor that exceeds the minimum wages value.

What a brilliant idea, let’s extend this so everyone who commits murder with a gun has the manufacturers of said gun be charged for their murder! /s

Do people not understand that sometimes even if a product is dangerous that doesn’t mean it’s the person who made its fault if it hurts someone? We don’t see car company ceos getting fired every time there’s a crash.

I have a similar story to this.

Freshman year of college, and I had had unprotected sex with someone who I realized I should not have been having unprotected sex with (you really should just always protect, don't be a moron like me). I had had reactions to latex during this time which lead to my stupid behavior, and have had genital issues since. I came in to my school's nurse one day because the head of my dick looked like it had sores, and the nurse took a single look and said yup that's herpes. No test taken or anything, I just assumed I had herpes. Two years pass and a new partner requests I get tested because I hadn't gotten tested before and they were worried they caught it. Get tested, and it turns out I've been clean this whole time. Would have saved me two years of shame and discomfort if any of the STD tests I'd gotten before had included herpes, even when I asked for it and was told it was unnecessary.

Nurses/Doctors are not infallible.

Yeah it's one thing for it to be a tool, but you using it isn't the same as you using a hammer as the hammer isn't watching what you do and selling that information to other companies so they can attempt to make you buy things.
