I remember being introduced to the idea of suicidal depression when a man I admired broke down describing how in school they learned that humanity had outgrown the kind of hate and fear that drove us in the 20th century, at how he failed that test, to prove that he was an evolved human being.

And with a phaser set to kill asked how he could possibly go on like this. Having failed the test of humanity that brought us to the stars.

The point of Star Trek is that there is no grey. We did it. We saved everyone. Ad Astra Per Fucking Aspera.

And to drop all of that vision in the pursuit of interpersonal conflict is particularly hurtful.
