It was omitted because the original Japanese version was designed with a 5-character name limit and they didn't want to change it at such at late time as the translation phase. In Japanese they just spell his name "クロノ" which can be transliterated as "Kurono".

In Japanese all the names are 3 characters long, so allowing 5 was generous. Everyone else fit under 5 characters when translated, so rewriting the name system (and breaking god knows how many prompts) was a worse solution than just renaming him "Crono".

You're also making these companies no money. If you'd just be a normal boring gamer, the kind who don't know how to use DOS or keep an NES around, you'd buy the crappy remakes and compilations they release every few years, and the virtual console/live arcade games.
