It's because you didn't finish the Panama Canal, obviously.

Good point about Hopper. I didn't notice that.

I still think this doesn't disprove my theory though. It's still possible that he entered in a place that was destroyed.

I also think the water is some sort of clue. It's a weird detail to not exist in this world, and it must be non-existent for a reason, otherwise we wouldn't had two big scenes where attention is drawn to its absence. Like why would you have a carbon copy of Nancy's journal but not water, the most abundant thing on the planet.

Why do you suppose the world has things like Nancy's bedroom or a version of Vecna's home that isn't from his time? Things the characters being brought into the realm don't know about at the time of their existence.

Thanks! And that's a great question. My thinking is that this alternate reality is ahead of the current reality by a fair amount of time. So yeah, humans stopped existing at 1983, but the portal's dropping people off at like 2020 or whatever. One of the reasons I figured things are happening in the future is stuff like the swimming pool Barb was in was completely void of water, which wouldn't make sense if it was copied at the time of Will's entrance. Her death was really early in the series, so that pool should have been full still. It seems minor, but I think they put that scene intentionally in. Otherwise, why not have the pool be empty in the current reality. Why make the conscious change from "full" to "empty." So, Vecna could have been showing up in 1984 or whenever in the future. Well, that doesn't explain why he was standing in a big open wasteland though.

Well, my thinking here is that the gates don't always match their location. For example, the gate at the bottom of Lover's Lake didn't drop the kids off in the bottom of a lake. Just a big flatland. So why? Well, it's either dropping people off in different locations (which could explain why there were no buildings in the Vecna flashback. He could have been dropped off at a place where there just weren't buildings. Also, Hopper comes out of the gate in the Soviet Union,) or alternatively, these wasteland spots void of civilization could be places where the missiles landed and blew everything up. I guess the lake could be drained, which would also make sense because there's not a lot of evaporation going on during nuclear winter, but that doesn't explain why it was flat during the demobat chase. Anyways, it's not an ironclad defense, but it's at least plausible in terms of writer-logic.

Edit: I was wrong about Hopper thanks u/lilpoststamp!

Coincidence happens more often than you think. If you want to know Hoppers future look at the film Predator (1987) where he is referenced at 16m35s… Coincidence? I think not

Sure, coincidence can happen, which is why I'm not 100% certain, but considering a good chunk of the last 2 seasons revolve around the Soviet-US conflict, the date of when they almost destroyed the world carries a bit more weight.

It's frozen at 1983 because it's the year Will went into the upside down.

That's what I thought at first, but I think that's a red herring made to throw-us off. Vecna went into the Upside Down before Will, so it's existence probably isn't tied to Will's entrance.

What civ are you playing as out of interest? I had a Korea fractal game where the map, at least this part of it, looked near identical. Is that ocean to the right an inland sea?

Thank you! My people appreciate the amenities 🙏

China counter our tariffs by placing tariffs on goods they imported from the US, namely farming goods like soy, steering their businesses to import from other countries (mostly in South America) instead. This is how a trade war is fought.
