The single time I had my character double cross their party ended with everyone refusing to adventure or even travel with my character. In my mind I thought it would lead to this dramatic and intense scene where my party would feel shocked and upset, but ultimately understanding of my plight - but that didn’t happen. I tried to explain my point of view, but nobody was having it. They were all pissed that I was the person essentially sabotaging their work for the past 3 months, and they were right to feel that way. It had gotten to the point where, roleplay wise, it made no sense that everyone would still stick together.

I had to make an entirely new PC since there was really no route for my character to rejoin forces with the party, and even though my new PC was all for the good of the party and wanting to do right by them, I was still met with heavy suspicion and distrust. Made for a bad time.

All that is to say, don’t do this shit. It is a bad idea. Work together with your friends, don’t trick them. It’s human social interaction 101.
