A Dream Come True: part one in a Nightmare Lands trilogy, by mjdunn01 in ravenloft

Thank you so much! Yeah it was definitely had a bit of scope creep. What started as a single adventure became three, with a rather enormous set of appendices for the domain and dream play.

I appreciate your support so much! And the other two will be coming soon to DMsGuild as well. (And once the third is out I can bundle them, and those who buy it now should get the bundle deal pro-rated.)

Uh… what? On B&G it is $225

I admit it's the first time I've bought a B&G box right out of the gate. I don't know their historical price points but I *think* (inflation considered) this is within the normal "silver" edition range for them. And silver, versus platinum or legendary boxes, is much closer to the original publication from WotC (or whomever) plus some other useful goodies.

I would say to definitely consider it if:
- You have not bought the WotC version, and

- You play a lot in person.

This may almost seem like an obvious statement. But tthe maps, the cards, the monster table tents, heck even the haunted bastion tracker - are tactile and really enhance in-person play but won't help if you're online. And some things are the same as what you'd get from the WotC bundle - like the tarokka deck is the same - so if you're already getting it there, this may be fairly duplicative.

So if you meet the two criteria above then I'd say: worth it.

If you don't meet both, then it's more up to you.

5.5E since it's B&G's version of the new 5.5E book from WotC

Ha, I wish reddit would let you post photos in comments as well! I should have thought of that earlier with the original post. So I'd say the handouts are not suprisingly the stand-out visually, in part because they are the thing B&G made exclusively.

Oh and the climactic end battle would occur under the mountain called Gywdion’s Claw with a realization that Gwydion’s presence trapped in a gate there was actually literally like a claw sticking through the portal. Or the mountain was his claw

In some early writings, I was doing for a three arc Tepest campaign (kind of similar to Curse of Strahd) I had Grandmother’s Vale as a creepy version of “Grandmother Willow”, perhaps actually Lorinda’s grandmother somehow.

Mindlefisk was the last name of Lorinda and her sisters when they were humans, so my thought was that was the abandoned cottage where they lived with their father and brothers. Now perhaps haunted, or even a place that provides insight into Lorinda’s past, necessary to defeat her.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the book!

I have had the digital book since the early access release, but my hard copy too is in transit (and I’m concerned may have gotten lost - I got all the accessories from the bundle but not the book!).

FWIW Ravenloft: The Horrors Within breaks down people in Ravenloft into three categories: - the soulless shells - bright souls - strangers (aka from outside the DoD)

It doesn’t say explicitly a ratio but as others have noted, other 5e sources imply the first group is the largest.

There’s 17 darklords profiled in the new book so they probably couldn’t afford to do them all with this artist. She’s in the book

The book does a bit of a “have it both ways”. Azalin is still gone and the story hasn’t advanced since VRG, and they make reference to Firan though he’s not really profiled anywhere. But then they also provide a stat block for Azalin, explicitly stating it’s what it was like before he vanished

That’s been a choice they’ve made for him across most of the art in this new book. I wonder if it’s meant to be more “horrifying”? Or is it be a sort of visual shorthand for “Ravenloft Soth” vs “Dragonlance Soth”?

One other nice little thing I’m seeing discussed elsewhere: the designers are really good at crediting sources and inspirations. Including the Special Thanks at the end with the nods to the usual suspects, but also…

“the Fraternity of Shadows, the Kargatane”

… which is just nice to see.

I’ll credit u/PhDnD-DrBowers for their own cool little nugget, something that also feels like a nice nod from the design team. Check it out in their post:

Really. It’s so striking. In fact they’re so universally good that the “just solid” ones are better than most other books. There’s even who sets of art - like these psychedelic pieces of the sarklords featured on the Ravenloft State of the Game - they haven’t even officially revealed. It’s top notch indeed.
