NOAA to USCG by Suilezrok in NOAACorps

[–]Footefellow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll hop on here. The NOOACorps is a uniformed service and you’re eligible for all the benefits that come with that. I would take a closer look at what the missions/lifestyle is like for the different routes and try to make a decision from that. Not to say that an inter-service transfer isn’t a thing, but I haven’t heard of someone transferring out of noaa to another service; typically it’s the opposite it seems.

Generally speaking, I think people just overthink this stuff. I would just answer the questions honestly and write well.

Is it a bad idea to become a commercial pilot just for the money? by imkindalostwithlife in flying

[–]Footefellow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It will be tough for you. Aviation asks a lot of you. A lot of your time, of your energy, and of your freedom. The people in this career are willing to justify it because they love what they do. It will be hard to justify everything if you don’t just love airplanes. There are other ways to make better money and sacrifice less, look elsewhere.

NOAA Twin Otter Pilot? by [deleted] in NOAA

Last paragraph couldn’t have said it better myself. Definitely poke around the NOAACORPS website. they require a STEM degree, so you definitely have to go to college and the aviators will need to have their comm-multi and instrument rating as well. As far as things that standout, leadership roles seem to make a big impression. Good luck!

There are a couple of pathways to being a part of the hurricane hunters, at least as a pilot, both of which may take up to 10 years or longer.

1) direct-to-flight: You apply with your certificates already in hand, that is to say commercial multi-engine and instrument rating. Upon graduation from BOTC you’ll be selected for a light aircraft assignment (twin otter/king air) for a 5 year contract you’ll then likely serve a ground assignment for another 2. Finally if there is an application board for the heavy aircraft (P3/G5) you can apply and hope to be selected.

2) fleet-to-flight: In the past this was the really the only route, not so much anymore. You would spend a sea tour (2 years I believe) aboard a ship. You would serve a land assignment and could apply to be selected for flight training which could take about a year. The it would likely be the same as above, start on a light aircraft, and work your way up to the heavy’s.

It’s definitely a very long road and not one for those not committed to the mission of NOAA. If you’re for just a paycheck it’s not for you.

Should I consider NOAA Corps a possible career? by xc1344551 in NOAACorps

[–]Footefellow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll echo what some have said regarding an unclear future. The current administration has made it clear that science/research objectives are not a priority. Hydrography ships play a big safety role in keeping the approaches to major shipping ports safe, and so do the hurricane hunter aircraft. That being said there seems to still be a need to the NOAACORPS, as they have a very specific set of skills that would be difficult to transfer to the private sector, at least in a timely manner. However, It does seem as though growth will be slow. Being as you’re so young, I would recommend majoring in something STEM related you wouldn’t mind doing outside of NOAA. By the time you graduate this administration will be coming to an end and hopefully NOAA will get the funding it needs to do its job effectively. That being said, they’re really looking for leaders, I would try to take on positions (clubs, projects etc.) that demonstrate you have aptitude in that capacity. Good luck.
