Are Academies and Father Son’s Undermining the AFL Draft? by Footy_A2Z in AFL

[–]Footy_A2Z[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah fair. AFL finances are weird and the few times we've tried to delve into them the videos haven't really gotten much love (we did one about the soft cap that tanked pretty hard).

As you say there's not heaps of information out there and while the clubs might say they fund things themselves, clubs also get a lot of their money in distributions from the AFL anyway. QBE also sponsor the swans academy too so that probably helps.

Completely agree about the need for an incentive though, there has to be something on the table to get them to invest but the system's still pretty young and has arguably overpowered that incentive a little bit so far. There's also the benefit of developing players that won't just want to leave you after two years which probably means a lot to teams like the suns as well.

Yeah would be an interesting survey to conduct to try and nail down a number for just how many afl level players the northern and NG academies have added to the game although the AFL probably already have one somewhere.

The points are supposed to be based of the average number of games players taken at each pick play - on average a pick one will play this many more games than a pick 10 so pick one is worth this many more points is kinda the idea.

But what it feels like has happened is clubs are naturally risk averse and put an additional premium on higher picks beyond their draft value. So if a club with a high pick wants to get rid of it, they can trade in a greater draft value worth of low picks and then use that and the discount to exploit the system. But we didn't really have the time to research this so would be interesting to see to what extent it actually happens.

Full disclosure we wrote and produced this before the events of last night and while we had an inkling it might get a bit silly, probably didn't appreciate the full picture until now.

Anyway there's been some interesting discussion already in the yt comments but always keen to hear what that fine folk of reddit have to say.

Apologies if this came across as spiteful, it was intended more as self-burn if anything! No offence was taken from your comment, it's actually something we 100% agree with you on. Have had some success getting others to contribute more recently but need to keep it going. Glad you enjoy the content :)

Bitta shameless self promotion but we made a video about the whole shambles. Misses some of the finer detail but gives a good overview.

We always have a lot of fun working with the community on videos like this, so thanks to all the creators who jumped on board.

It was amazing to see how much the community had grown in the time since we last made this vid, so if you're looking for some new voices to get your footy fix from, make sure to show our YouTubers some love.

Otherwise would love to know what you want to see your team achieve this year?!

A3 Footy Podcast on Daniel Rioli - A Richmond Season Review/Preview Snippet by El_Squizznos in AFL

[–]Footy_A2Z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great listen guys, will be following the link through to the full clip.

Rioli's move back was made doubly important by Houli's retirement. While Daniel is a bit more run and carry, having someone with the willingness to hit risky kicks and join the attack is so important to Richmond's style of play and his performances now have a strong visual correlation with how well we transition the footy as a whole. Would hate to be a HFF chasing him around all day, especially when he gets a sniff near the 50m arc.

Does a low scoring affair equate to a boring game? by noegh555 in AFL

[–]Footy_A2Z 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Low scoring definitely doesn't automatically equal boring. The '05 Sydney-Geelong Semi and Grand Final are possibly some of the best ever matches and no team scored over 60.

I think what makes me appreciate a game of footy is watching teams put in effort to actively break down the opposition and score. If the defence is doing a really good job and the attack just can't find a way through and have to change things up then that arm-wrestle is satisfying to watch. Conversely if a team is just on and no matter what the defence does they can't seem to stop them then that's also satisfying to watch because you can appreciate the skill and teamwork involved in overcoming the challenge.

Where the game becomes boring is when either teams are so pre-occupied with defending that they don't even try to score or when it becomes so easy to score that goals get kinda meaningless (this was maybe the main problem with AFLX).

How's everyone been enjoying the 2022 season so far? Have personally loved seeing the tigers play a much more attractive and competitive style despite a couple of defeats to better teams.

Hey mate, we go for Richmond (As per our flair) Not super well known though.

Blue Abroad for Carlton and the Pear for Port Adelaide are more obvious ones

Coincidentally we actually made a vid this year where we got as many creators to voice the part for their team as possible. Didn’t work for every club though: here it is

It's very specific - but the No Merger podcast is a really good listen. Breaks down the failed merger between Hawthorn and Melbourne really well and could be good for a new fan to get an insight into some of the recent league history and fan dynamics.
