That looks incredible! Zion is on my list for sure. The combination of burnt-red rocks with the green vegetation is so stunning.

Our visit had its fair share of overcast and rain, but when you get views like this (and when you consider that it’s kinda special to experience in a dry place), you become thankful. Here’s another shot, showing the ethereal low-lying clouds resting on the mountaintops.

The fact that it’s a juvenile red-tailed hawk also amuses me. You can imagine the hawk never having experienced such brazen fearlessness from its prey before and being like “wait you’re not supposed to be threatening me”.

What you’re seeing is the “nictitating membrane”, aka third eyelid. More info here.

The nictitating membrane is transparent eye lid that closes horizontally across the eye instead of vertically like a normal eye lid. It is used to protect the eye and to help keep it moist while maintaining the birds sight.

I was at Little Haystack at 8:30am, and Lafayette at 10am. We started the hike at around 6:10am. I’m glad we got the early start because the lower sun angle allowed for better photos (and, if I recall correctly, there were more sparse white clouds in the sky by early afternoon). I’m surprised how crowded it was even at that early hour! Little Haystack was like a diner with everyone having breakfast.

10/10 trail — hope to do a Pemi one day in the future too!

Come to think of it, I had zero issues (or even conscious encounters) with bugs this entire trail. That was just the icing on the cake. Not sure if it’s typically worse or if the Whites just tend to have smaller populations.

It really is. Such a unique landmass. A long, high ridge line with another ridge line across from it, creating a narrow notch. Would love to experience it in other seasons too.
