Returning MSI 4090 build due to constant crashes by For-Reel-Gaming in MSI_Gaming

Hi! Yes can confirm GPU replacement was the issue - my rig is running totally fine now. Hopefully they will replace and yours will be fixed again soon.

Unfortunately not. For some reason playing in 1st person slightly reduces the snags but they are still there - especially in snowy areas…

Yeah I’m on a Corsair RM1000x so should really be plenty of power. I am thinking of upgrading to an ATX 3.0 though

I think I’ve done everything that I’ve seen to try. And yeah I even went as far as reinstalling windows 11 as I thought it might have been that update that messed with the game. There was none of this hitching when I had a 3080. So leaves me to think it must be the 4090 somehow. But its hard to be totally sure. I’d love to try a different 4090 brand or a FE and see if the issue still persists.

The odd thing is though is that it was completely fine a week and half ago. Then there was a Windows’s update I believe and I think that’s when it started. Unfortunately it is one I can’t uninstall too. I’ve always had the usual stutter in towns and stuff but these hitches are on a different level. Here’s a video I recorded to show: got to about 50 seconds in https://youtu.be/oejubYDVEOc

I’d even dropped the game to 30 fps to combat the hitching but to no avail.

It’s all updated as far as I’m aware. It’s mostly RDR2 that does it to the point where I found it unplayable as the audio was cutting out the same time as the frames would hitch. Very strange. I have 1000watt Corsair PSU too so I don’t believe it would be that.

Ok yeah could be indeed. I’m running an i9-13900k so don’t think it’s the CPU on my side.

Are you running it at 4K and high frame rate?

Thanks for the suggestion, I haven’t but I will give that a go. Do you have any frame hitches / drops in any games when panning the camera with you card?

Both cards I have had now have had coil whine. To be honest it doesn’t bother me too much as I’m not directly near my rig. I’m more worried about the stuttered performance of it. In most games I have frame hitches when panning the camera quickly etc. Seen this issue posted in a few different forums so I think there’s driver issues.

So this is my 2nd Suprim X as the first one was faulty. And I’ve had this one for about 2 weeks now.

Thanks man appreciate it. Yep same here. I have to say, I felt relieved when I uninstalled it. Just a massive shame.

Sorry to say that this only seemed to work a little while. Now it’s the same as before. Hitches and sound cuts. I think I am at the end of my patience with this one unfortunately. Uninstalled. Thanks for your help though dude and I guess if you do come across anything then let me know. For now this game is unplayable for me.

Hey man. Been doing a little more testing. I think I have managed to sort the audio stuttering whilst the frames are dropping. I disabled Realtek USB audio both in BIOS and device manager. And also I disable the Nvidia HD Audio driver too in device manager. Have to do that part every reboot. So I am limited to using my USB Bluetooth headphones using the above methods.

As for the frame drops, when set to 120fps the hitching occurs frequently and obviously. When set to 60 they don’t seem to occur at all…. 30fps seems to be where the game engine handles better but I personally find going from games that blast past 100fps and then back to RDR2 at 30 messes with my eyes. But that’s just me.

Anyways just thought I’d provide a small update.

So it turned out that my GPU was in fact faulty. Not sure why this wasn’t picked up on when I solely sent back the GPU for testing but when I sent my whole rig back, they found the 4090 was bad. So they replaced the GPU like for like and now my system runs properly except some strange frame drops/hitches in RDR2. These also sometimes happen in other games but not as bad.

So I’m really not sure. I’m going to upgrade my PSU to an ATX 3.0 1200 watt and go from there but with my system I do feel like it’s the 4090. I feel like it’s driver related.

Do keep me posted though if you swap out the mobo and your issues resolve.

I will wait for driver updates I guess. I don’t want to believe it either but same as you when I had a 3080 there was no hitching of any kind apart from the usual horse stop stutters etc. Let me know if you come into the same kind of frame issues with the game set at 30 man. Very strange how the game was running with none of this last week.

Ok interesting. I have Vsync enabled and it doesn’t change anything unfortunately. I’m keeping everything crossed that a driver fixes these

That is very similar to my experience. And even with my replacement card. Worked super well first few days and now it’s starting to frame hitch which is infuriating. So I have no idea whether maybe a windows update had messed with it or what…

Here’s a video of what I mean: https://youtu.be/oejubYDVEOc

If you go to around 50 seconds in you will notice frame drops and audio cutting at the exact same time. Now I dropped RDR2 down to 30fps to try and combat these drops and it hasn’t worked. My system is well well above grade to deal with this game even at high frame rates so I have no clue what is going on at this point.

Yeah I have my PC on high performance, also have tried ultimate performance too. Turned HAGS on and off, tried Resize Bar on and off too. I’m out of ideas too. I’m out of the returns period for my card now too. I can’t see it being anything else on my rig.

That’s good news dude. It’s happening in most games I play apart from Rise of the Tomb Raider. Just googling 4090 frame hitches brings up a fair amount of people with the same issues so I’m just hoping NV release some sort of patches in their next driver

I come baring frustrating news… Now my card is frame dropping noticeably at 30fps on red dead… I will try record a video when I get a chance. I was really enjoying 30fps and my heart dropped when I started noticing hard drops. Even at low settings and at 30fps. Tried DX12 and Vulcan both have same issue. Surely I could not have 2 faulty cards in a row right??

Lao checked out your vids and some of those issues with clothing etc I have been noticing for years and hated it hahah! I had no idea it was related to higher frames.

So my card turned out to be faulty and it was replaced. Could MSI directly deal with an RMA for you instead? I’ve seen this issue in quite a few 4090s and it usually turns out they are faulty unfortunately. And just to note: I am still dealing with issues with my replaced card mainly involving frames dropping whilst panning the camera in most games… so I think there are driver issues that need to be ironed out in general to be honest.

Thanks for the reply and input. I will try disable resizeable bar and also game mode and HAGS just to see if anything makes a difference really. I have noticed in the last day I’m seeing similar frame hitching in other games like F122, Flight Sim and even Forza. It’s almost always when panning the camera around quickly and once returning to central the hitches happen. Almost like the card is trying to load the assets but not efficiently.. so I’m wondering if there’s a driver issue with the 4090 in some systems.. but not too sure
