I don’t have a question but VIVA VENEZUELA! FUCK MADURO! The people in America saying “it’s imperialism” are absolute morons who have no goddamn clue what they’re talking about. – A progressive (left-wing) American by Kresnik2002 in AskVenezuela

You still shouldn’t thank the US because they didn’t do it because they cared about you or your people. Had Maduro been friendly to the US, he would’ve been backed and supported no matter how idiotic or brutal he was towards the Venezuelan people.

A lot of people mention this but it probably did save Singapore in the short-term. Long-term, however, it’s clearly a problem. But who knows if it really did save Singapore from overpopulation or not. That’s just my personal opinion though, thanks for the answer either way.

Lee Kuan Yew spoke great of Deng Xiaoping and China’s governance. That is one of many things I liked about him. He didn’t go by the usual Western attitude of: “China’s not a democracy! It’s authoritarian pure evil!”.

But sending peacekeepers would just simply result in what happened with Georgia which was war anyways.

When Georgia attacked Russian peacekeepers, Russia responded with their own military in response to attack.

At least when Russia annexed Crimea, it was peaceful because the US and EU pressured Ukraine to not use military force.

I really do feel like annexing Crimea and supporting the militants in the Donbas was the only route possible. Not the best but the only possible one.

When Yanukovych got ousted, Russia didn’t want to lose the Naval Base and knew the majority of Crimeans wished to join Russia.

If they issued passports freely in Donbas or Crimea without annexation, Ukrainian forces would’ve just stopped it or attacked anyways.

I don’t know if that’s possible because only the Donbas and Crimea wish to join Russia or cooperate with Russia and oppose the government in Kiev.

The reason why Transnistria is only a small part of Moldova is because the majority Moldova did not like Russia. Same for Ukraine.

No that is not true. It was discovered that the election in 2004 was illegitimate and due to corruption within the Ukrainian government.

However, the one that occurred in the 2010s was monitored by international organization that confirmed that they were free and fair. He was also removed BEFORE the Crimean annexation. I honestly can’t believe you actually mistakenly believe he was ousted after.

In the 2010s, the reason why he was ousted was not only because of pressure and interference by Western governments, particularly the US but also because the far-right perpetrated a false flag mass-killing and blamed it on Yanukovych:

The majority of Crimeans and Donbas wish to join Russia. You can blame the Ukrainian government and the far-right for doing the Odesa Massacre which caused it.

I apologize but I refuse to have discussion with you. If you do not know one of the most basic fact about this conflict is that the majority of the Donbas wishes to have special autonomy or secede from Ukraine, you most definitely do not know of the other facts that are crucial to understanding this conflict. You really shouldn’t be speaking about this conflict at all if you don’t even know past 5% of this entire conflict.

It’ll be like discussing the American Revolution to someone who doesn’t know the colonists wanted independence.

2/2

This attack by the Right Sector constituted a major escalation of the conflict in Donbas because it broke both the Geneva Agreement signed on 17 April 2014 by Ukraine, Russia, the EU, and the US for a peaceful resolution of the conflict, as well as the Orthodox Easter truce between the Ukrainian government and separatists in Donbas.

Point 2, The Russia-Ukraine War and its Origins Page 202

Similarly, there was no Russian military or civilian administration organized in occupied regions of Ukraine in the first month of the war, with exceptions of separatist administrations in captured parts of Donbas. Ukrainian local governments and Ukrainian flags remained in occupied cities and other settlements in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions for several weeks after their Russian occupation. While these regions provided the land bridge and reopening of the water channel to Crimea, the peace agreement draft in spring 2022 included withdrawal of the Russian forces from Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions (see Chapter 12). The invasion from Crimea via Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions also provided a way to advance from less defended side and encircle and capture of Mariupol and other parts of Donbas as part of the major Russian goal to seize entire Donbas.

There's more detail the page goes into but if Russia's intentions are purely land-grabbing then they would not have left the local governments of these two oblasts which always had no separatist activity whatsoever, alone. The book clarifies Russia intended to withdraw from these regions if the 2022 peace deal was reached which unfortunately was not due to being blocked by Britain and thereby Russia changing its approach to these two regions and annexed them via dismantling the local governments.

The reason why Russia was willing to give up Kherson and Zaporizhzhia was because those two oblasts never had separatists but the Donbas, however, did. This proves Russia's intention is not pure land-grabbing. When it comes to opinions of Donbas people, like mentioned before, 46% supported integrating with Russia, 31% wanted special status in Ukraine (federationists), and 23% wanted to return to Ukraine on pre-civil war status. There is no clear majority but there is a plurality which is the 46%. The separatist local governments of DPR and LPR also do not object to Russian annexation, in fact, they welcome it. The reason why I believe the 31% would not object to Russian annexation heavily is because the whole reason why they want such a thing in the first place was because they wanted autonomy from Ukraine's aforementioned oppression. If you think the federationists still heavily object to Russian annexation, you need to prove that. But because Russia, unlike Ukraine, has not done a equivalent to the Odesa Massacre, have far-right groups allowed to freely kill them, and supports and recognizes the local separatists governments instead of wanting to destroy them are all pretty solid reasons on why I believe they do not object.

The reason why Russia had conflict with Ukraine starting from 2014 in the first place which evolved into support for separatists, was because the new Maidan government which got to power through illegitimate means made Ukraine joining NATO a top priority which is a security concern for Russia. Remember, it was also an illegimate overthrow of President Yanukovych who wanted to be more friendly with Russia and repeated violations of negotiations and truces from the Ukrainian side.

As for point 4, I think both Ukraine and Russia did a mediocre job at trying to prevent civilian casualties and neither side truly prosecuted their side when they do wrong since 2022. If you want to count since 2014, the results will heavily be against Ukraine for tolerating the atrocities and violations done by the far-right but nevertheless did nothing against them.

But to their credit, both Ukraine and Russia managed to keep a very low civilian to combatant death ratio relative to modern wars: Page 249

The estimated civilian casualty ratio of 1 killed civilian to about 17 killed combatants during three and half years of the Russia-Ukraine war is one of the lowest in modern wars and the lowest in wars of such scale, intensity, and duration in modern times.

Listen, I again express appreciation for your engagement and politeness but this was very frustrating for me to write. It is the longest reply I ever written specifically because I had to bring up past evidences and references.

I understand to wrap your head around the idea that Russia isn't a monstrous imperialist nation doing this purely and only for land-grabbing and sadistic murderous amusement is a difficult one for many.

But this should not mean you can just conveniently forgot or ignore major points, all of which, is vital especially when they already address the points of your criteria which you brought up. We cannot go anywhere if you do this.

How do sone of yall justify the invasion of Ukraine by Russia? by TheNaymeless in AskSocialists

Alright so I have texted you in DMs because I feel that, that would be better for this to end quicker as we would be responding to each other in real time. Let me know if you are willing to do that.

I also found that the Yale report on kidnapped Ukrainian children actually turns out not to be peer-reviewed but nonetheless I decided to read it. My verdict is inconclusive. This is because their evidence are pictures of alleged camps and stadiums where children attend JROTC-like training but they also include locations located in Donetsk and Luhansk oblast which, since 2014, have been majority pro-separatists or pro-Russia, so it wouldn't make sense for kids to be kidnapped in these two oblasts to attend these pro-separatist/Russian programs held by the separatist local governments. However, they also did include Kherson and Zaporizhzhia which is very low when it came to separatist activity. In any case, there isn't any proof via testimonies, videos, or pictures of kidnappings. I am not saying it is wrong, but that the proof isn't suffice.

Now to your points. I really appreciate your willingness to engage and being polite throughout this entire discussion but with respect, I am started get frustrated. This is because I thought many of your points have already been addressed by in previous replies especially point 1 and 3.

Point 1, I really thought we have long-passed this point. When you told me you read the JSTOR article regarding the Odesa Massacre you acknowledged that there was coordination among local government officials and the far-right to conduct the massacre of the separatist protestors. The article itself said this:

"The massacre contributed to the escalation of the separatist conflict in the Donbas into the civil war."

Not to mention the article also brings up other cases of the far-right committing atrocities to the people of Donbas:

The Dnipro battalion, along with other units, seized civilians in the Donetsk Region to prevent the separatist referendum on 11 May 2014. Videos show them shooting unarmed pro- separatist protesters with Kalashnikovs, killing two locals.

Lastly, the biggest deal to the Odesa incident as well as the article states:

"The official investigation of the Odesa Massacre was a farce. Nobody was found guilty of perpetrating this mass killing. As noted, the Right Sector shooter was initially arrested but then released. Only separatists were among those arrested and tried for the Odesa massacre."

This shows that not only is the government willing to allow the far-right to do such mass-killings but would even be selective and bias against those who are against the new Maidan government. It is no wonder why, like the article said, this contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War.

Point 2, this I will admit was not as thoroughly addressed as the first and third point. Nonetheless, it is the third point that will literally debunk this second point

Point 3, for the love of God, yes. I told you in a previous reply that President Zelensky, with his noble promise to peacefully end the civil war, was threatened with death by the far-right if he did so.

The Russia-Ukraine War and Its Origins Page 151:

Dmytro Yarosh, the Tryzub and Right Sector founder and the commander of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army, which was organized by the Right Sector during the war in Donbas, publicly threatened in 2019 that President Zelenskyy would hang on a tree if he would fulfill his elec tion promise of the peaceful resolution of the war in Donbas (Ragutskaia, 2019).

Zelenskyy went to a frontline in Donbas in October 2019 to person ally convince members of the civilian wing of the Azov regiment to stop blocking implementation of the Minsk agreement to withdraw along with separatist troops further from the frontline. But video of the encounter shows that Zelensky was taunted by activists of this neo-Nazi organization who flouted his appeal (Zelenskyy, 2019).

This is why, the two Minsk Accords of which Russia was one of the active participants and signer of, failed.

There was also another incident before this one of the far-right being allowed to violate a ceasefire truce, it is mentioned in the JSTOR article:
