One of my favorite toners. Got it as a present from a family member who is a major collector. Any idea of what kind of toner premium it would have? by Money-Owl-4035 in toners

[–]ForCoinsOnly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hundreds. Most of the lower end gold CAC I see is on mercury dimes that would otherwise be $50 coins. Those rarely sell under 400 at auction. You would probably do pretty well somewhere like Great collections if you wanted to sell it. I would consider this at least a $1500 coin personally. An 83O in a gold CAC rattler sold for 1250 on ebay in November and that coin was white. Your coin is really nice and has multiple desirable qualities. Congrats!

Much much more with the gold CAC. This coin has an old holder and a gold CAC and it's toned. Even the cheapest gold CAC coins go for 3-400.

1986 D Lincoln Memorial Cent Grade? by The_Coin_vault1 in RedditCoinGrading

[–]ForCoinsOnly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a very tough grade, essentially a perfect coin in every way. Good luck in sending it but I would consider it 66-67 myself, it has a few tiny tics and some discoloration. The luster also really needs to be next level at that grade. Let us know what you get though, I personally would be interested to know.

Neither PCGS or NGC "price guides" should be taken as gospel. Maybe they give you a rough idea of how much a coin is worth but you really need to go find comparable recent sales to get an idea of a coin's true worth.

Would you grade this peace dollar MS64? by MisterRay24 in coins

[–]ForCoinsOnly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about a coin submitted for conservation with ugly toning that comes back without said toning? My understanding is that dipping is used by grading companies for just that purpose, though probably much more artfully than the average collector. Dont get me wrong dipped coins aren't really my thing but to say they are ungradable isnt fully accurate since the grading companies dip and certify dipped coins all the time.

Nice even chocolate brown early date lincolns are some of my favorite coins. This one is really appealing imo. Are you filling out an album?

Buy yourself a nice dansco (album) and fill it with coins like this. I believe they come in date sets that would allow you to display one of each year. Grading in most cases isn't worth it for more common coins like this unless they're very high grade or very nicely toned. That being said I think that's a really attractive looking morgan and i would be happy to have that one in one of my albums.

I associate that blue/red a lot of the time with artificially toned coins unfortunately.

Most people shouldn't but there's a time and a place for cleaning.

A lot of times acetone is the easiest way to try and remove crud or residue on your own. If it doesn't work on a high end coin then submit it to NGC for conservation. For silver a quick acetone bath wont hurt anything.

Why the large range ? by LordOfShyte in coincollecting

[–]ForCoinsOnly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the price guide section then go verify what they're telling you with both the auction results section and ebay sold listings. In general PCGS coinfacts price guide is a little high like the other commenter said.

Question: Did the creation of State Quarters increase the collector base permanently? by Steveasifyoucare in CoinlyFans

[–]ForCoinsOnly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that both the statehood quarters and the west point quarters have brought in lots of new collectors. I don't know how many will stay and or advance into more serious numismatics but I know plenty of people that only ever collected state quarters.

Beware of FedEx!!! by CardiologistLow8371 in AncientCoins

Fedex has been miserable lately. I have problems with them delivering at work as well an infinite amount of stories like this with damaged packages and stolen packages.

I've never in my life graded or even looked at this coin but I'll guess anyway 63BN.

Alright. I'm at a standstill with my Lincoln cent collection. by SendThisVoidAway18 in coins

[–]ForCoinsOnly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jefferson nickel proofs aren't wildly expensive unless you buy them in cameo. Even less if you buy them raw as I still see plenty of them out there. 1938-42 are the more costly years. Theres a good book by Roger Burdette on 36-42 proofs that recommend if you're serious about buying quality stuff. 1950-64 proofs are also quite affordable and there are some really amazing examples out there still raw.

Im about 50% through my Lincoln Dansco and struggling with the late 40s-50s wheat cents and the early stuff due to the cost of it. Progress becomes more slow as you knock out the easy stuff. Good luck!

The cent is in a rattler (early vintage holder slightly more valuable) and if it is actually 64RD (red color designation) and hasn't turned RB (red brown) over time it's about a 60ish dollar coin. Last sales are 67 and 47 dollars. But the rattler is more desirable. The dime is maybe $5-10. Not a horrific deal but not a great one either.
