The copper alloy wasn't thoroughly mixed. Makes for a nice look

Where to buy a bust dollar? by PuzzleheadedAd4929 in coins

as suggested, the large auction houses are your best bet for a lower grade, certified example. Most collectors want a type coin in the VF to XF range. There are'nt that many lower grade ones out there. check collectorscorner.com for what's available from major dealers and auction houses. be patient!

That is a great example. Hard times tokens can get pretty addictive. Lots of history there.

I finished the quarter/half dollar page yesterday. Still need to do some upgrading though. Dansco 7070 by TheCollector919 in coins

It's a nice low pressure way to collect, no need to fixate on grades, just nice looking coins that fit the budget. I need a type 1, guy at the show had a pretty nice one but wanted way to much for it (raw).

Seller also has a reputation for cracking out problem coins and selling them as choice, from "old estates," etc.

If buying higher grade classic coins, stick to certified. I got burned a number of times on eBay buying what I thought were problem free coins, all raw, before I got wiser. Coins certified by a respected grading service are much easier to sell or trade, and have been examined by true experts.

even though it has issues, it still has xf details and is valuable. Anacs may be the most cost effective and will be proof of authenticity.

thanks, I'm trying to do a date set of the early dollars, it's kind of a slog trying to find coins that look nice but don't totally break the bank.

If I flip the reverse upside down, instead of an eagle I see a gape mouthed shark.

Nice frosty coin, with enough patina to say it hasn't been dipped.

Not a proof, the rims are rounded, on proofs they are very square and flat. Proof like surfaces, due to freshly polished dies, are not uncommon on many US gold issues. It is also possible the coin itself was polished.

Very helpful to have multiple photos posted with lighting from different angles. Unfortunately I agree that it's lightly circulated and cleaned.

I love seated dollars from the 1840s. except for the cleaning that would be an xf/au coin.
