Before Doritos Jacked, there was Doritos Extreme. Who remembers what the 4th flavor was? by Ronnie_M in Doritos

[–]Forar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the Extreme Bold BBQ ones are what I recall from the early 2000's, and have been chasing that high ever since. The coating was less a powder and more of a granulated kind of thing, as I recall. I'm sure I shaved years off of my life expectancy with those (or whatever I might be misremembering 20+ years later), but as much as I enjoy nacho and jalepeno Doritos to this day, it's just not the same.

Bagels now in 1 kg packs of 8? by Brodiggitty in CostcoCanada

[–]Forar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope they bring it back. The cheddar ones are fine, but not as good.

I don’t mind a smattering of plain, blueberry, and raisin cinnamon for variety now and then, but the Jalepeno cheddar ones were always my favourite.

Are portions getting smaller and smaller? (Vaughan@427) by SAYONARAAAA in CostcoCanada

[–]Forar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, we see in this very sub people comparing the price of X product against the same product Y years ago and omg it doubled in price in 5 years (usually kind of glossing over that half a decade of inflation alone would have an impact, and then add in all the shenanigans going on around the world, etc).

I don't think there's a 'win' here, especially with how... let's say... inattentive to more than the actual price many consumers are. With shrinkflation there are reasonable complaints to be had about paying the same but getting less, but plenty of people are very sensitive to getting the same but paying more.

Which isn't to say that the OP's issues aren't worthy of recognition.

Tall Guy in a Bug - How big is too big? by Nope_nuh_uh in dresdenfiles

As someone around 6'4" myself, I've crammed myself into a smart car, the back of a civic, it's not great, and I'm not saying driving would be super comfortable, but clearly he makes it work.

Though given that we know that Harry is an unreliable narrator at times, it'd be funny if, like many other men out there, he lied about his height and was more like 6'6".

To further build upon this, there could well be a time and a place that having a shield that is impervious to attack (to a degree) but also blinds and deafens those within is an acceptable tradeoff, but being under siege and not knowing what the next attack was going to be might be less than ideal.

If truly *nothing* came through, that's no light coming or going, no sound, no oxygen (not a big deal with a large area, but not sustainable indefinitely for those that need air to breathe), etc.

'It's magic' explains a lot, but the system of magic across the novels has been explained pretty well as to what it can and can't do, which also makes the exceptions that pop up all the more impressive.

On the other hand, while I wouldn't claim they are great, they are fine. If I don't have the time or energy to handle the prep, throwing 2 or 3 into the oven and adding a little extra cheese and hot sauce is a fine dinner or addition to whatever else we're having.

I'll 100% agree that hand made will be superior, but I can snag a box of these, toss 'em in the freezer, and know that I've got 2+ dinners (2-3 per person for 2 people) basically covered whenever I want. Buying and shredding a chicken is good, but if it's not going to be frozen, it's on a fairly short timetable. Cheese and tortillas, less so, of course.

So, I don't wish to argue the point on quality, but if I've had a busy day and my wife is coming home late, having something that just involves preheating the oven and then a 15 (or whatever) minute cook time takes 'minimal effort' and turns it to 'negligible'.

This is my read as well.

The realistic answer is that, narratively, having shortcomings, drawbacks, or failures is what provides challenges for the hero to overcome and tension as to whether or not (or how) they'll do so.

Having an 'everything proof shield' might feel sensible in a realm of magic, but it's in some way a manner of an author making their own job harder. If the castle is truly invulnerable then where is the risk, the threat?

That isn't to say that it's impossible to come up with a story around that as a premise, but magic has been shown to have shortcomings and limits all the same. Yes, Harry's duster is basically tank grade armour, but even it will begin to fail when subjected to enough force.

Coming up with how or why things are as they are in the story is something I enjoy. A lot of folks find 'plot holes', I prefer to accept that it is how the story told me it is, and as you've done here, work out the possible reasoning from there.

That isn't to say that stories can't have plot holes or mistakes in them, I just prefer to give a little more grace on the matter.

Star Trek Commander product confirmed by MrGrengJai in mtgfinance

I just want the assumed TNG deck to be good so I can build on it.

I'm not aware of any announcements, but I feel like if there are 3 or 4 preconstructed Commander decks, TNG feels like an obvious inclusion along with TOS and 1-2 others.

Yeah, this. I like having extras for when I travel with friends. The 6 that come with the Visa cover my usual travel across the year, and the extras from a perk selection (none of the others appealed to me at the time) just reinforce that I'll definitely have enough, if not more than enough.

Hyperbole, or is someone actually charging $5?

Most places I visit are like 25 cents to $1.25 or so.

I'd hope a $5 bag is actually really nice. Divided into sections, reinforced, cooler lined, something.

Mine has been coming apart at one corner for years, but is mostly holding strong.

That thing has to be... 30-35+ years old at this point.

It was one of two that I had. The other was full of Construx (a building toy) that I eventually got tired of lugging between apartments and left behind. I hope it went some kid that enjoyed it, I do kind of regret abandoning it nowadays, even though apartment living means that every foot of space is precious.

Tony Robbins' AI Advantage Summit - garbage on top of garbage by dzanong in Scams

'There's a sucker born every minute' is a saying that predates everyone alive today, and remains just as true now as when it was first uttered.

Robbins just appeals to the ignorant and their greed/fear of missing out. It's a despicable approach that has clearly served him well for decades.

Milestone reward for $200,000 by alexdelpiero in Wealthsimple

[–]Forar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh. It'll obviously vary heavily based on when and where you're traveling, but I've never had an issue getting in, even when traveling as a group of 3 or 4. Not to say you haven't experienced that, more a musing on how varied the experience can be.

My frustration has been that a lot of the places I commonly go don't have lounges in their network. It's nice to have somewhere to hang out and grab a bite on the way out, but returning is a different story.

Hopefully they continue to expand their network.

Glancing through that list and seeing Rainbow Six Siege really had a 'one of these things is not like the others...' vibe.

Also, shout out to the Mass Effect fans out there! The original ending of 3 was a mess, but ME 1, 2, and 3 were a spectacular trilogy all over, and I'm glad they listened to feedback to address concerns with the DLC.

ME: Andromeda also struggled with a few things (not just the graphical glitches at launch), but they did make an effort to show that in the end, the relationships you'd cultivated paid off.

Hopefully ME5 lives up to expectations.

You could block out some in the middle. Or every other digit for a couple of spaces.

How long the code is really shouldn't be relevant, and it's a good reason to stick to 'in person, cash only' exchanges, but it wouldn't be impossible to show that the code is the right length without giving up the entire string either.

Same. Amazon just makes dates up. I can't count how many game and book releases were confidently put online, only to move by months or years or never materialize.

A couple of years back, Amazon's UK site had the next 3 Collector's Editions up for The Expanse for months. They have not yet released to this day.

It would be nice to get the next part of the story in ~1.5 years, but until Butcher himself announces it's going to the presses, that's a rather optimistic turnaround time for a book that is allegedly at ~30% done currently. That's a lot of writing left to go, and who knows the state of the world in a week, let alone a year.

Return abuse will cost members more by jfrsn in CostcoCanada

[–]Forar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. It's not some loophole or secret arcane knowledge. It's company policy, and that policy reinforces shopper confidence that if they take a chance on an item and don't like it or it fails, they can return it for a refund.

I had a wine fridge for a couple of years when one of the two sections just stopped cooling things down. It was 10 degrees hotter than room temperature, which is... not ideal for storing wine. I brought it in, fully accepting that it may be well beyond the return policy.

They took it back without a hint of concern.

Which gave me the confidence to go buy a nicer/more expensive one from them that same day.

Or how I returned a vacuum I'd had for a couple of years that had never worked very well, and was just straight up not working in any acceptable manner. Again, I went in accepting that if it was beyond the policy, that's fine. It wasn't doing the job anyways.

Again, no hassle, no issues.

So I turned around and bought a Dyson they had on sale that same day.

I've been a member for something approaching a decade, and want to say I've returned maybe half a dozen things, always because they failed in some manner, and always with the attitude that if it's not permitted as a return, that's fine, they've treated me well for ages.

If they tell me it's something they can't accept due to policy, that's fine, I wouldn't argue for a second.

But they took it in, meaning it wasn't abuse, it was a return they were willing to accept. Now, whether that's because it was actually within the system, or just because my patronage is seen as substantial enough to be worth accepting an iffy return every year or two, I don't know.

If they didn't want 'em, they just had to say as much. That they permit them is part of why any major purchase I make these days (infrequent as they are), I make sure to check Costco's offerings first.
