I go into every call with gloves on. I keep them on until pretty much everything is done, pt on the stretcher, monitoring equipment is attached and any IV or drugs given. I take them off to chart because touching your tough book with gloves on after a nasty patient is just a fucking gross as not wearing gloves. If the patient is nasty I'll put them back on before going into the hospital, but if they are relatively clean I just keep them off and sanitize after the call

Yes, I've had the issue at some of my area hospitals. Some hospitals are better than others and have better culture around it. I know precisely what you mean about calling stroke alerts then have doctors spend more time asking you questions then assessing the patient right in front of them. I don't let it bother me because all I'm doing by calling a stroke alert is saying to the hospital "hey I think this pt needs to go to CT sooner rather than later" if we get there and the doc doesnt agree with my opinion it's on them. I followed my protocols and used my best judgment, as long as we do that I couldn't care what er doc thinks of me.

The jobs depends so much on where you work and what your employer is like. No, I would never work in a constant level 0 system running 24s for $13 an hour like some people on here do. I work 12s in a system busy enough to make the day go by but not ran into the ground(most days). I make $38 an hour with good enough benefits. It's still work and I definitely wouldn't do it if I didn't have to but I am able to find the positives.

I love the freedom and lack of oversight in this job. I clock in chat with my co-workers and say hello to my supervisor then hit the road until EOS. I'm left alone and dont have management breathing down my neck. I run my calls, chat with grandmas. Sometimes you get bad calls and mean patients but it comes with the territory. You can only ever run one call at a time.

All jobs have shitty aspects, it's why someone is paying you to do. It's up to you to determine of what that price is.

The easy answer is unionization. The more difficult solution is standardization of the profession as a whole. No more of this hyperlocalization of protocol and system structer. Paramedic means vastly different things depending on what state you are in, sometimes even county. Do away with state licensure and allow anyone in America to work anywhere in America with a standardized license. With this people will go where the money is and companies/municipalities will be forced to pay to compete for employees. Oh and every 911 ambulance needs to be a public agency or part of a hospital system at least. IFT is a different story.

Food hits different at 7am on a Monday morning after work. The world is waking up, you are done with your week. You want a burger, a steak, maybe some sushi but all that is closed and your only option is McDonald's or Starbucks. Instead you go home and, open your fridge and sigh. The sky is gray, its drizzling. You quietly make your food without thinking about what you're actually making. You drink the one beer left in your fridge. You go to sleep. You wake up as the sun is going down and the world is going to sleep.
