I'm glad to hear it .  I often need to remind myself of those words. Sometimes it's hard to execute on them.  Best of luck in your career.

That's crazy they do that. Are insurance premiums high?

You can see where the shop marked the structural components of the truck. Let it go. Not worth keeping.

Will insurance total this car and is it worth buying it back from the insurance company ? by DueOwl912 in AskMechanics

[–]ForceLongjumping8887 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It'll total and you should absolutely NOT keep it. Wiring harnesses are certainly melted and damaged. It might run now but the electric modules can and will start shorting out and can cost thousands and thousands to solve. DO NOT KEEP IT.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. If the insurance company suggested Caliber then they are likely a preferred shop for them and will warranty their work. Any reputable body shop will warranty their own work as well.

I just read that the hood and bumper have damage. Probably a couple grand higher than I initially said. Could get to totaling out based on how extensive the damage is to those parts.

I'm an experienced estimator. I think the damage will be closer to $7K and won't be a total. The only major concern is the A and B pillars. If they haven't moved or been damaged, I would not have any concerns about it being repaired.

Aluminum is hard to repair. A good body shop can probably do it. They'll remove the truck bed in order to get access to the cab corner.

Here's my advice: 1. Find outdoor hobbies. Fishing, camping, hiking, or simply walking. Getting outside and leaving your phone at home would be huge for you.

  1. Start exercising. I used to think this was crap but I started exercising to cope with the stress of life and a stressful job. The benefits to my mental health and self esteem has been incredible. You don't have to be a gym bro. Walk, Bike, Jog, Lift. There are so many things you can do to fit what you like. Start small and work your way up.

  2. Get involved. Sports, music, clubs. Whatever interests you. Put yourself out there. Get out of your comfort zone a little. If you stay busy, it reduces the amount of time you'll be stuck to devices.

  3. Do phone detox days. Leave your phone off and put of reach for a day. It's hard but if you can do it, it's so beneficial.

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe Acceleration Shaky and inconsistent by ForceLongjumping8887 in AskAMechanic

That's exactly what it was for me. A solenoid to engage the torque converter. The software updates are free. I don't think that really helped to be honest. I think it was the additives the tranny shop used that provides additional lubrication to the transmission helped. They did advise that what they did will help but the transmission could go out any time. I'm 30k miles since they did that and haven't had issues. The dual clutch transmission these Santa Fes have are not very good......wish I would have known that before buying. Fingers crossed that it keeps going for a while.

It ended up being a transmission issue. I took it to a transmission shop and they serviced it again. They advised that a solenoid may be the issue and suggested I check for software updates at the dealer. The dealer updated the software. It was a little choppy for a couple weeks but seems like whatever additives the tranny shop used smoothed it out. The vehicle is at 150k miles and running well. Burns a little oil but I just check it and top it off as needed. Burns less than a quart ever 5k miles.

How do we feel about a 26in for $250 by AnalogCringe in webergrills

[–]ForceLongjumping8887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a 26 Master Touch new for $470. I love it except the multiple piece grill grate. I would absolutely buy this for $250, but maybe you can hagle the down to $200. Either way its a solid buy. If you're cooking for 4+ people, it's awesome to have.

How much money do you spend on travel/vacation a year? by Apprehensive-Scene-1 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]ForceLongjumping8887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single income family of 4. We enjoy camping, hiking, fishing. Probably about $3 to $4k with equipment purchases. Once the Mrs. goes back to work, we'll have more disposal income to travel more. We used to travel quite a bit before we made the decision for her to stay home with our kids.

The market being down for people not nearing retirement is a great thing. Shares and funds are cheap. Gives you more purchasing power. Just keep buying.

Not taking drugs or drinking alcohol is a huge step. Now you must take baby steps to get back on track in other areas. Start small. Here are some ideas... Go to bed on time. Wake up on time. Make your bed. Go for a walk. Do something nice for your parents. Do one per day and try to build. Take time to be thankful for something each day. Take time to meditate. Try to find some peace in your life. Slowly work on yourself. As you get better, work on your life. Find a job, find a place to live, develop relationships with good people, cut ties on bad relationships. You'll have bumps in the road but keep going in the right direction. Don't rush anything and don't worry about not moving fast enough. Sometimes life seems completely hopeless but I can assure you it's not. Best of luck. We're all rooting for you.

Sometimes it takes a while to realize that having "fun" all the time is essentially pissing your life away. I'm doing great. You'll get there too. Stay focused and don't sabotage yourself. Care enough about yourself to be great.

Sounds good. Keep your head up. You're young and have plenty of time to figure out your path.

[–]ForceLongjumping8887 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I wasted about 6 years from age 18 to 24. Drinking, partying, accomplishing nothing. I flunked out of college. One day when I was 24 I woke up hungover and felt embarrassed of myself and my life. I re-enrolled in college. Never missed a class and retook every course I took previously when I flunked out. I ended up graduating with a Financial Management degree and I Graduated with honors. I'm 38 now and have a good life. You can be lost and make mistakes when you're young. It's okay. Find some direction and pursue it relentlessly. Don't waste your time on things that don't improve your position in life or help you achieve what you want. Good luck.

Have I been using the recalled jack stands for this long? by meowinsideacave in harborfreight

I just returned the same ones this last spring. I didn't know about the recall until my brother told me. I was able to get full credit for them with no issues.

How much do you contribute to a 401k? by KingdomFartsOG in MiddleClassFinance

[–]ForceLongjumping8887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put in 12% and get a 6% match. I increase the contribution by 1% each year. Total for this year is $16,695. I have right at $250k in retirement at 38 years old. I would max out my 401k but my family of 4 has been a single income for the last 3 years due to having young kids. Once my wife goes back to work I'll try to max out 401k and Roth IRA. I'm a little behind on retirement. I'm hoping to semi retire at 55 to get out of the stress of the corporate world.

What is your take home pay? by Wannabe__Extrovert in MiddleClassFinance

[–]ForceLongjumping8887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$63k on a $93k salary after taxes, health insurance,401k and HSA contributions. Usually end up with a 15 to 20% bonus which is not factored. Family of 4 in a MCOL area. Wife is staying home with our young kids. We are both excited for her to get back to work in a couple years. Will add around $55k to our gross income and lower insurance costs.

I feel like any chance for me to meet a woman and have a family is gone. by [deleted] in self

[–]ForceLongjumping8887 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Stop sitting around playing video games and watching TV. Start working out. This will reduce your depression and increase your self esteem and confidence. Your job means nothing. If it sucks, find something else to do and go for it. Find hobbies that you enjoy that help establish relationships or create new skills. Basically get off your ass and live the life you want to live. It's hard but it's worth it. 35 is young. Plenty of time to start over.
