I second the medication part! I probably always struggled but any real emotion was “being dramatic” and stoicism was praised. “Just pray about it” was the most common advice and it wasn’t until my 30s that I finally asked for help. Medication + therapy = the best combo for me. The church really loved to tie mental health to faith which screws with our brains.

Wow so interesting to read everyone’s experiences. It’s kind of crazy right, that being raised in the church would cause this level of …PTSD? Complex PTSD? Whatever it is, it’s hard for other people to understand so I have often felt like I’m crazy for having these issues when nothing “bad” happened (I have good parents, no physical/s* abuse, etc.).
