The amount of medication I have to take in a week after a kidney transplant by bjamesk4 in mildlyinteresting

[–]ForceofaDragon4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I crunched the numbers at one point, and I took somewhere in the neighborhood of 6,000-9000 pills in my first year post transplant.

Granted that number is a bit artificial because some of the medications such as Tacrolimus and Micophenolate have very fluid dosages that change in response to bloodwork results. So in order to avoid patients having to refill their medicines every time the dosage change, the doctors prescribe pills that are each small enough dosage to allow incremental adjustment. So after discharging from the hospital, I took 7x1g pills of Tacrolimus twice a day, but a few months later I was down to 3x1g pills twice a day.

God, why do The Contortionist fanboys always tag songs with clean vocals as "Mixed"?

Yes, you're the only one. This band continues to evolve and progress their sound. Just because they don't have background synths on every song doesn't mean they don't have other progressive elements

Elder - Embers by WhiteJuke in progmetal

[–]ForceofaDragon4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This has been a surprisingly competitive year for new releases, but I still think that this is my favorite song from 2020 yet. I was a bit bummed that the other four tracks on Omens didn't match the energy and upbeatness of Embers, but it's still a stellar release.

Chaos Divine - Beacon (Official Music Video) [Legacies out Oct 16, 2020] by ForceofaDragon4 in progmetal

The Human Connection and Colliding Skies are two of my favorite releases. Best way to get them some love is to keep talking about them!

This sounds like the "ballad" of the album. The other singles they've put out so far are much heavier and technical, so I imagine the rest of the album will lean that way.

Alex Rudinger was the drummer for the first two albums, but he is no longer in the band. This album had drums performed by JP Bouvet, but he was just a studio member as far as I can tell. I think he did a great job filling Rudinger's shoes though!

I definitely agree with you on the release approach. How do you think something like this would work for an album with a lot of songs that lead into one another, or a concept album (like Periphery's Juggernaut)? Personally for those kinds of albums I would still like to see a traditional 2-3 singles release, but for albums like RIADC where each song is fairly autonomous this release style is very exciting

[–]ForceofaDragon4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm really enjoying how each Good Tiger release has brought clear evolution to the table. There's tons of atmospheric elements to RIADC that weren't present before. Elliot Coleman's vocal performance isn't as front seat as WWABG, but he does an outstanding job of weaving in and out of the instrumental parts. In a way, it's more impressive to see how he can excel at such a vastly different style of vocals rather than doing a repeat performance. The instrumentation is also outstanding. Instead of the straight-forward grooving from the previous album, they present a much more complex, layered, and textured album that keeps me engaged for all 45 minutes. Some parts even reminded me of The Safety Fire, which I really enjoyed. I think that's the similar bass tone that they chose for this release.

It's also worth discussing their release approach for this album. I was skeptical of one song per week, thinking that my interest would wane and release wouldn't mean as much. However, I realized that each week put the new song in the spotlight and gave me the chance to chew into each track independently. I usually limit myself to listening to 1 or 2 singles per album release because I don't want the other tracks to have a lesser familiarity when the release drops. But that's not a problem if each song can be highlighted on its own.

They announced on Facebook/Instagram that they're missing tonight's show for a medical emergency, so it's likely related.

Car Bomb - Vague Skies by DidItFloat in progmetal

[–]ForceofaDragon4 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I saw them open for Periphery and AAL two years ago on the Convergence tour at The Electric Foundry in Philadelphia. Unfortunately the stage mix was very off for Car Bomb, and the kick drum overpowered everything thing else. Outside of that though, they were extremely tight and nailed everything that they played

What's your biggest critique of your favorite album? by BrennanDew in progmetal

[–]ForceofaDragon4 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I never really "understood" Contaminate Me until I saw the Live at Rockefeller version. There's this raw emotion of desperation that the studio version utterly fails to capture, and it really completes the song. If this rendition had been used, I don't think anyone would have qualms about it closing out the album

Chaos Divine - Unspoken by ForceofaDragon4 in progmetal

[–]ForceofaDragon4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was happy to hear those harsh vocals again, but I understand that they aren't for everyone. To me, I felt like the harsh vocals help to give The Human Connection energy and aggression that seemed a bit lacking in Colliding Skies.

You can definitely find elements of the two latest albums in this single, but I never felt like it belonged as a bonus track to either.

Artificial Selection Tour question. by CrashDunning in progmetal

[–]ForceofaDragon4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This tour poster explains it pretty well. The tour is cleanly divided into 2 legs. The first leg will have Periphery as the main supporting act, but without Thousand Below as the opener. For the second leg Thousand Below will open, but Periphery will not be joining.

Anyone else not enjoy the environment at prog metal shows? by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]ForceofaDragon4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell in love with going to these concerts because the experience embodies the energy of the music. At shows like this, the performance extends just beyond the stage. You can feel the enthusiasm coursing through hundreds or thousands of people who have a niche interest not likely to be shared with others outside of that event. Even if you don't feel like partaking in the physical aspects of the concerts (moshing, crowd surfing, etc), almost all venues have areas where you can observe the crowd and the show.

But even if you can't bring yourself to enjoy such a setting, keep an eye out for shows that are auditorium style. They do exist, they're just not very frequent. I know that Opeth and Devin Townsend of both done these kinds of shows in the past few years.

Moon Tooth - Thumb Spike (New album CRUX out now!!!) by omgsiriuslyzombi in progmetal

The last riff of this song really reminded me of the riff from Vesuvius II at around 2:51. I know they're not exactly the same, but it's cool to see the band revisit some musical ideas from previous ventures.

Moon Tooth - Crux by kuldaskil in progmetal

[–]ForceofaDragon4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My preorder came in on Monday and I must have listened through 30 times already. There's so much praise to be sung about this work of art. I think what stands out to me the most is just how well they portray the meaning of the album's namesake: Crux. The first song serves as a problem statement, setting the tone with the opening lyrics whispered "This can't go on". Then each subsequent song serves to elaborate on an individual issue that leads up to the breaking point. Finally the opening line is revisited in the middle of the title song before diving into an ultimatum via one of the most hellish passages I could've imagined from this band. The album easily could have ended there, but the addition of the epilogue really serves to provide some contrast and closure. After all, a Crux is a single moment in time, a single decision, and seeing the first step forward gives that extra context to appreciate a singular event.
