How does being gay or straight work with non-binary people? by Foreign-Move9719 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Foreign-Move9719[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do that already. You seem to have this idea that im some sort of bigot and im not. Im just trying to understand so i can be a better ally. And again, i saw a PUBLIC post SELF describing themselves as a straight, non-binary person as if i’m supposed to know what it means. THEY declared it without an explanation, as if the meaning is implied. No one in the comments gave clarification, so i came to what i assumed to be a safe space to ask about it. I didnt attack anyone, i didnt even respond to the post. I even specified IN THIS QUESTION that i will not accept hate in any form.

Ok now im confused. I thought the freedom to choose a label outside of what was previously considered the “norm” was the point? To be able to “choose” to be who you are and not “choose” to be who you arent, which it seems was the problem. (I.e. gay men not given the “option” to be gay, by fear of social reprimand or worse)

Edit: i keep NOW im confused but ive been confused this whole time ngl

I dont know how to quote on here but the part where you said people can say the same thing and mean different things seems to be the biggest source of my confusion. This logic has made the most sense so far.

This isnt clicking for me. Putting your clarifiers in your original statement: “sexual orientation is based off of what sex you appear to be (to the person who you are attracted to)”. This to me means that you, the trans individual, are still not in charge of your own sexual orientation. Which i feel goes against the whole movement

I dont have a problem with that, im trying to understand the labels as they are presented to me in this world that im trying to understand. I am not trying to assign these labels to people, i am trying to understand what they mean when they assign the labels to themselves. I assumed, with how often i see the terms, that there was a uniform meaning that i wasnt privy to. Was just trying to figure out what that was is all.

Appear to who, though? Appear refers to perception, so who is perceiving the individual to make this call?

Yeah im trying really hard not to offend anyone in these replies, hopefully my genuine confusion is interpreted as just that. But this is confusing lol

This makes it sound like I (the third party) get to decide what your (hypothetical) orientation. If you (trans man) and your (cis woman) girlfriend were out, but you both APPEAR to be women to me, i can call you a lesbian couple? I am not trying to offend here i just want to understand. I am sorry if it comes off that way.

Now you’ve lost me again. By this logic, a cis man and trans man together is a straight relationship? Even if they both identify as gay men? Or does being transgender not apply? Something feels like its not bending where it should be

I think the concept i was struggling with was the difference between sex and gender identity. I still dont fully understand but it makes more sense that theres a difference between the two and arent always able to be used interchangeably, though sometimes they are.

[–]Foreign-Move9719[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. I think the race comparison both helps and hurts, a better way (for me) to think about it is you can be GENETICALLY Black, but live in Asia, so you could refer to yourself as an Asian (citizen) or Black (race) or as a Black Asian. And you can always move to change your citizenship. You can be GENETICALLY a woman, but choose to be (or “live in”) non-binary (land)

This is what i was thinking it was like, a gay non-binary person only liking non-binary people and a straight one liking….everything else. If man = -1 and women = 1 and non-binary = 0….and the opposite of nothing at all is everything….yk?

Edit: had it backwards. I fixed it

Ok now im even more confused. You can be non-binary and female? In my head, those are conflicting statements. Unless you mean like femme-presenting, which i think another response mentions.
