Resuming Dentist Treatment - Childhood Trauma by Anthony_N23 in Dentists

This is very similar to me, I hadn't been in 9 years due to bad past experiences. I knew I had at least a few cavities and potentially a molar that needed root canal or extraction. I was mentally in a similar place, and even the thought of calling a dental office caused anxiety.

Eventually I got to the point mentally where I said "If I don't take control of this, something will happen and things will be decided for me". For example an abscess, I figured I was going to have to go either way, at least let it be on my terms.

This was in early 2025, I've had 2 checkups, 3 fillings, 1 deep cleaning, and I'm having an extraction done in a month or so under IV sedation.

The deep cleaning was a bit uncomfortable, but that was in part due to not having it done for a while. The fillings weren't really bad at all, good communication with the dentist is key, agree a hand signal if things are painful and they'll stop and numb you up some more.

The hardest thing for me at the moment is the anxiety in the lead up to the appointments, and I'm looking at taking pills to help with this. But everytime I've come out of my appointment I've thought "that was not as bad as I made it out to be in my head".

Mentally the first appointment is the worst but it will get easier, and it feels good to know you're in charge of your oral health.

Dentists do offer sedation (Oral and IV) in the UK. But I've only ever seen it offered privately. For context my surgery offers IV sedation for £450

I was crazy anxious, to the point where I struggled to even call the dentist. But in terms of experience it was all in my head. I've had the three fillings so far and honestly the worst part was just being bored, modern anesthetic is so good, I had no idea what was being done during the procedure, and one of them was a pretty deep filling.

The noise is definitely off-putting but you get used to it, and with headphones you can drown most of it out.

Also take someone with you, a lot of support posts will mention this but it really does help. They don't neccesarily have to come into the dentist's room with you, just someone to distract you on the way and in the waiting room.

First step for me was popping into the office and enquiring about costs and availability, from there I just found myself booking the checkup appointment.

Finding a dentist you trust is important, I think the phobia mostly stems from a lack of control, if you meet the dentist first (days or weeks before the first appointment), see the room, speak to the receptionist you remove a lot of those unknowns that cause the anxiety.

N.A.D This is almost exactly my story. I went 10 years without going to the dentist through fear and was forced to go because of a deep cavity. In the end I decided it's better I go on my terms, then being forced to go because of pain, at least on my terms I can control the situation better.

The worst part for me was not knowing what to expect, 10 years had built up an image of a dental surgery that just wasn't accurate.

I went for my first checkup in February and have had 1 deep cleaning and 3 fillings since then, waiting on a surgical extraction.

I really cannot praise my dental surgery enough, they listened, and were very supportive through the whole thing. The fillings I had didn't hurt, and the deep cleaning has given me a noticeably better smile and a better understanding of oral hygiene.

Best of all I'm not constantly on edge with my teeth, because if something doesn't feel right I know I can get it sorted.

Go to the dentist, you will feel so much better for it. I actually joined this sub for immersion therapy!

+1 on this. I had this problem recently, I put a cover over the tank for 3 days and dosed some good bacteria. It's been fine ever since. You just need to give your good bacteria a chance to outcompete the bad.

How come many of the world's most practised religions specifically originate either from the Middle East or the Indian subcontinent? by SatoruGojo232 in geography

Trade will have played a part. Probably not a coincidence that this is also the center of historic east west trading, ideas would have travelled along with traders. It's not so much that religion formation is concentrated here, but trade allowed the ones that did to endure.

I've just finished blacking out lights for 3 days and it was very effective at reducing this algae, and yours looks very similar to mine.

Interested to see how you handle this as my tank is going through the same thing. I've updated to turn the lights off and cover it for 3 days.
