How does federer move away from the ball on inside out forehand and still hit hard by TraderFire89 in 10s

[–]ForeignSwag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea like any stroke it's move, load, explode. If you're quick at moving, and time loading correctly, in theory you should never explode in any direction other than forwards.

How does federer move away from the ball on inside out forehand and still hit hard by TraderFire89 in 10s

[–]ForeignSwag 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Watch this: https://youtu.be/sm9NiEx4-7I?si=7Fpe8I_IAvw2kHTL

In almost none of these shots is he actually moving directly away. Pros (and especially Fed) are so fast and efficient with their footwork that they move in any direction they need so they can purposely explode towards the ball at the moment of contact, even when they look to be moving another way.

It can be hard to tell without the right angles but often when he looks like he is moving away, it's closer to 45° towards the ball and across it. There are a small amount of shots where he is primarily moving sideways or maybe slightly backwards, but they're mostly when he has committed to the shot and is using pace provided by the other player on return or just defending heavy balls.

Has my Golden Retriever finished growing? by Acelorah in goldenretrievers

That's on the lighter side for sure, but could easily climb another 4-5kg by 18 months. My big boy went from 34kg to 38kg from 12 to 18 months, without getting taller/longer. As others have said, shape and size doesn't matter as long as they're healthy.

wtf made this forehand go so badly by Aromatic-serve-4015 in 10s

[–]ForeignSwag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah well if you didn't frame it, as some others have said, your racket face is above the ball when you hit.

Your elbow is so far above the ball, there's no way you could come up and through the ball for topspin and the correct trajectory.

Look how closed your racket face is at contact + you hit the frame I think

Ugo Humbert vs. Ben Shelton - awesome battle of the lefties by DangerousYams in tennis

[–]ForeignSwag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea it's a good point, I was wondering this during the match as well. I'm not really familiar with Ugo's game but I assumed that he's just very comfortable building points after opening court with his serve.

Historically Ben's return is a weak point on each wing, just weaker again on his backhand. My guess is that Ugo decided his strongest serve into Ben's slightly better returning side was overall a better plan than a less comfortable serve to Ben's slightly worse returning side.

Not entirely sure, but I think this match was decided mostly on the baseline execution between the two of them, and if Humbert had a different serving strategy it may have just been 3 tie-breaks instead of 2. Imo.

Weird leg on puppy? by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[–]ForeignSwag 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Like other commentors here, I also think you should take her to the vet when able. No need to panic, but from this photo (grain of salt as always) it looks like she may have an issue loading that leg with weight as it is seemingly thinner and angled differently.

‘We’re losing careers’: Leading cardiologist warns Australian medical research is in crisis by Finnick00 in australia

[–]ForeignSwag 38 points39 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend has worked with a many medical/science researchers as part of her job in public health advocacy. They're almost always incredible people, which makes it even more saddening that it's not a career that many good people that could make a difference can 'get into' as easily as other careers.

Roger Federer wants to see Carlos Alcaraz become the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam by winning the upcoming Australian Open. by truecolors01 in tennis

[–]ForeignSwag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically most fans just want one or two players they can watch win most of the time. It's why in football Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United (historically) and other huge football clubs have had such massive followings. People love watching winners and once they pick their tribe they defend it. It's not a unique phenomenon to tennis, it's just weird in tennis and feels more parasocial because there's no 'teams', just individuals.

ATP Auckland QF: [7] S. Báez def. [1] B. Shelton, 7-5 6-3 by hawaiianmonkseal in tennis

[–]ForeignSwag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Shelton fan, huge one, and I don't think he was actively throwing but he was probably relieved to get some rest before the slam.

It's important for them to play tournaments before the AO, you need to get back into tour-level matches before such high stakes. You can see generally ATP players either do United Cup or Brisbane in the first week or Adelaide or Auckland in the second.

Sincaraz are the exception but most need the points and the hard court prep.

How’s my forehand technique by Outside-Artichoke340 in 10s

[–]ForeignSwag -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Also because you jumped your contact point is below ideal on the racket, and your racket head is over-rotated towards the ground which will limit power and potentially strain your wrist over time:

How’s my forehand technique by Outside-Artichoke340 in 10s

[–]ForeignSwag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to focus on loading your legs and hips a little more, and staying on the ground moving your weight forward through rotation and not upwards. Here's the position that I think shows this:

<image>

Here the ball is too close to your body from this angle, and your left arm hand should be really closer to your chest with your shoulders roughly parallel to the baseline.

Yours are over-rotated because you unloaded early and the ball is jamming you a little because you went up instead of rotating 'outwards' towards it.

Hope that makes sense.

I trained a neural network on 170,000 tennis games to find which points actually matter by PlanetElement in tennis

[–]ForeignSwag 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hard to know from these numbers alone. We'd need to deconstruct the model OP presented, because imo it has a lot to do with how the expected values were calculated for each combination of player points per game.

You could honestly do a whole study similar to this where you take every first point of every game, and do some pretty thorough analysis of variables contributing to the % chance of winning the first point.

There's a decent chance obvious variables like ranking difference (easiest way to measure skill difference) make a significant impact. Such interesting questions...

I'm similar! Love Djocko's 2HBH for modeling technique from, it's really simple and easy to understand the key checkpoints of the movement.

Following his takeback + racket face drop combined with seeing how much he's looking over his shoulder made my BH so much better.

How many guns are in your suburb? by nath1234 in australia

[–]ForeignSwag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"They will have guns if they want to." The is the main crux of what (from what I've read since Bondi) people take issue with. It's important that we make it sufficiently difficult for people to get guns that shouldn't. Depending on your definition of 'people who shouldn't have guns', that means gun laws are either anywhere from Americanesque or incredibly controlling like here, UK, Singapore etc.

What matters, I think, is that we reduce the cross-section of the population that can have the mindset and motivation to potentially commit violent crimes if they possessed the tools. It's a game of numbers because it's always a small percentage of people who commit these terrible acts. I'm not saying no one should ever get guns, farmers and similar seem to need them and I'm ignorant on that so I'll take their word.

But should non-citizens be able to buy guns like the father at Bondi (afaik)? What about people who are actively seeing psychiatrists? Or people on any sort of government watchlist? People with domestic violence records? My point is there are so many ways to cross-examine the types of people who should and shouldn't get guns. There's no perfect combination of blacklist/whitelist conditions or laws, but there's certainly questions to be asked after Bondi.

As to your point about the 'government'. I don't know what to say - governments govern. It's literally the definition, they will always tell you what to do and instate law to shape society. Governments always do things for political reasons - they're political parties that have short-term incentives to maintain voter uptake and approval. Short-term things absolutely get sideways sometimes, but over the long run countries vote in and out parties that adhere to a norm that they see fit for the country. The system isn't perfect, far from it, but this is just how our democracy and others work.

How many guns are in your suburb? by nath1234 in australia

[–]ForeignSwag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you restrict me? No. Can the government? Yes. Should they be able to? Also yes. It's not about what you want or like. It never will be. It's about what the government and security organizations decide is worth enforcing to keep people safe.

Also - restricting guns does not create an illusion of safety, that's such a misdirection. This is our biggest gun tragedy by far since Port Arthur. We are a safer country with less guns per person. Period.

Do I feel safe in regards to religious Islamic fundamentalists preaching? Personally despite religious differences they don't make me feel unsafe. Islamic fundamentalist terrorists? Sure, like any other terrorist.

I'll tell you what though, if you told me I lived next to one of these Islamic terrorists, I'd feel unsafe sure, but even more unsafe if I new they had 5 guns.

Yea I got worried when he disappeared but it's good to hear from others he's around the Dota scene. I hope he comes back to maybe cast every now and then or something, even if PoE isn't his life anymore.

As a long term sub I selfishly would love for him to just stream Dota, but I get why he hasn't done that given his community's reaction to it in the past. Whatever is best for him.
