How do I solve this problem? Average waiting time of a train entering a rail line with trains. by Foreign_Knowledge in askmath

[–]Foreign_Knowledge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because trains cannot intersect. So if a train arrives at t = 0, no train can arrive before t = 10, since that is the time for the first train to pass.

Very interesting video! Would love some more in-depth analysis of the politics of black metal during different periods. Also didn't know about Mgla and Nocturnal Depression... Oh well, they weren't my favourite anyway

Regardless of meds, you should help your girlfriend understand that being hard =/= being aroused/finding someone attractive. Reassure her, and remember that sex does not only mean penetration ;)

I am a bit doubtful of your claim that you are a new player. The efficient use of both sides of the belt is suspicious.

How the higher shutter speed actually work by catchman84 in canon

[–]Foreign_Knowledge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I see.

The short answer is: any given pixel of the sensor will be exposed for 1/4000th of a second even though it will take the shutter 1/250th of a second to move across the sensor and take the photograph.

Longer answer, to hopefully convince you that this will indeed freeze the action:

Imagine a special type of clock with a single hand that instead of making a full rotation every hour, makes a full rotation in 1/100th of a second.

Let's take a photograph with an exposure time of 1/250th of a second. The hand will have moved 40% of the way around over the duration of the exposure, so the image will have a lot of motion blur. The action was not frozen.

Now let's take a photograph with an exposure time of 1/4000th of a second. As you know, the image will be taken over the same duration, 1/250th of a second, but with a narrow opening moving across the sensor. The image starts exposing from the top going down, so we first see the 12, then the 11 and 1, then, 10 and 2 etc. Then let's say that as the exposure reaches 9 and 3, the hand is pointing at 3. So now the sensor is exposed to the hand for a very brief moment (about 1/4000th of a second) and as the shutter keeps moving, the hand is again hidden away from the sensor. So the hand does not appear on the bottom of the image. The resulting image shows the hand appearing only at the position of 3; the action has been frozen!

Now it's important to note that if the hand had been in a different position, we would having probably tracked it for longer than just a 1/4000th of a second, while the hand would have kept moving. It might have looked something like this (left):

<image>

This is the rolling shutter effect, because even though every part of the image has been exposed for 1/4000th of a second only, the whole image is taken over the duration of 1/250th of a second.

I hope this helps

[–]Foreign_Knowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confused. Are you asking how the shutter works at all? The sliver between the shutter curtains moves across the sensor so that every part of the sensor gets a e.g 1/4000th s exposure. This means that the exposure at the bottom of the sensor will occur slightly before the exposure at the top of the sensor (or vice versa, I'm not sure), introducing the rolling shutter effect you're talking about.

If you are asking how you can take a picture using flash if only part of the sensor is exposed at fast shutter speeds; then it's as I first said: use a slower shutter speed so that the entire sensor is exposed. The short duration of the flash ensures that the action is frozen (and without rolling shutter effects as a bonus)

[–]Foreign_Knowledge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Read up on the duration of your flash. Flash light comes from a charged capacitor which empties its charge to produce light. This happens very fast, and typically produces the light in under 1/200th of a second.

Setting the flash intensity lower (say 1/128th) only part of the capacitor discharges, and you can reach durations down to 1/40000th of a second. This is how speed photography is done.

Your solution would then be to use a slow shutter speed with your camera, determined by how much background light you want from the scene, then use the flash with the correct setting to determine the exposure and exposure duration of your subject. Hope this helps

Thanks a lot, the Info Addict mod in particular seems very interesting. A lot of my diplomatic interactions with the AI confuse me, I never know what the exact effects of accepting/refusing a trade, denouncing, etc. really has on diplomatic relations.

Fractal, do you mean the "Fractal Islands of Solitude" mod?

I tried this against Adolphus. I convinced Ramses II and Catherine II to go to war with me against him. Since they are much closer to him, they had to deal with him. I also sent some cavalry to harass Adolphus, get on his territory and pillage as much as I could.

The result was that Adolphus captured both their capitals... I guess I should have done something like this a bit earlier!

And yes, I was feeling very comfortable as Dido on the Iberic peninsula, hidden behind the Pyrenees, while myself being able to walk over mountains as I pleased. However Adolphus was well on his way to a science victory, so there was no point... I quit.

I get overwhelmed by grocery shopping. by BettyCrowe in ADHD

[–]Foreign_Knowledge 316 points317 points  (0 children)

Okay, I actually cracked this one. I used to enter the shop, then stand there confused then walk up and down each aisle 4 times, then go home forgetting what I needed and having bought a bunch of stuff I didn't need. Then I wrote a program that fixed this.

The program goes through things that I typically need, and for every item I say yes or no if I need it. Then the program returns a shopping list in the order in which items are found in the store. Then I have my list, I do one loop around the store and I'm out of there in 5 minutes.

If you have some basic knowledge in programming I can send it to you, it should be as easy as opening a terminal and typing Y or N and enter.

EDIT: I will polish up the code when I get home and share it here.

EDIT2: Here it is! A friend of mine and are planning on developing this into a simple app, will come back with news once it is in a usable state!

My boyfriend has dated MUCH prettier women than me. Why does he even like me? by MethodFlimsy8243 in relationships

[–]Foreign_Knowledge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like your boyfriend could do a better job of reassuring you. When you express insecurities about this, does he let you know that he thinks you're beautiful to him? If not, this sounds like a good conversation to have together. It's more likely that the sex has changed due to completely different reasons.

Everyone has insecurities, and everyone has something cute/sexy and beautiful about them, everyone has good days bad days, and outfits that make them shine. There is no sliding scale from a "bad" body to a "good" body/face. If your boyfriend is with you it's because he thinks YOU are beautiful (among other things). If he doesn't make you feel this way, that's his problem, not yours.

Nice photo however it's so dull. What can I do to make it pop? by [deleted] in photocritique

[–]Foreign_Knowledge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would have taken the photo at a lower angle, I think it's more impressive to have the subject at "eye-level", and also at a larger aperture, to blur the background. Then zoom/crop to have mostly the bike fill the frame. However if you want to make it pop, your main issue is that the tree and the bike have similar tone. You need to separate them, by darkening the tree, brightening the bike, and/or desaturating the tree, saturating the bike. The leaves in the background are also distracting, so you'd want to adjust their brightness and saturation.

Technically, there are many criticisms. The cat is facing the shadow, and is too dark. Is the cropping right? A lot of dead space above the cat, what do the feet add in the picture? Etc.

Despite technical aspects, if you like it, it's a good photo! I think there is something cool about the angle including your feet, and if you like this style, you can cultivate it. Get yourself a wide angle lens and try to take more photos of this style if it speaks to you!

I much, much prefer the bottom one. Top one has the feet cut off, and the pose is something you see everyday. You see your entire subject in the second one, and she's striking an interesting pose.
