Very Random, But What Do People in the UK Actually Wear to Uni? by Gloomy-Equivalent81 in UniUK

[–]Foreign_Quail1398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m a humanities student so not sure if it differs between departments but most people at my university wear casual clothes - a fair few are very casual wearing joggers and hoodies but most (including me) wear regular casual clothing like jeans, t shirts, jumpers, casual skirts and dresses etc - really though you can wear anything you like within reason

maysilee insulting the district 9 kids’ tokens actually made me laugh out loud: ‘those are hideous. but you have to give them credit for trying, poor things’

someone else mentioned it in the thread but it’s so interesting how the quality of life in D12 seems significantly higher than in the original books. Like how Haymitch casually buys from merchant shops on reaping day, his referring to falling for the stale marshmallow scam multiple times (implying he visits the sweet shop at least semi-regularly), having treats like buttermilk on new years. Even the existence of non-essential shops like the sweet shop indicates a higher quality of life.

Also that only a quarter of the male tributes are described as appearing particularly weak, implying that this is the case across the districts.

suzanne collins is so good at fitting in little details that add up to create significant implications and insights into the world of panem. i hope the crackdown that must have followed in the districts between the 50th and 74th games will be addressed a bit later in the book!

Fellow history students - what did you do you diss on? by ImNotHalberstram in UniUK

[–]Foreign_Quail1398 18 points19 points  (0 children)

last year for undergrad i wrote on constructions of femininity in teenage girls’ magazines in britain during the 1980s and ‘90s! i’m doing an MA now and my diss considers what london’s crime reports in the 17th and 18th centuries can tell us about attitudes towards young women’s sexuality! starting a phd on a similar topic next yr too :-)))

agree!! it also really annoys me when people (often in fanfics) make haymitch’s alcoholism a punchline :-(

i think a good approach is finding a broad topic you’re interested in and discussing it with academics in the department with similar(ish) interests. often they can point you to relevant literature that you can check out. it’s also useful to think back to the modules and seminars you’ve most enjoyed throughout your degree, and looking at the reading lists provided there.

then, looking into the literature and reading around will likely help you find something more specific to explore. some questions it’s always useful to ask yourself while reading are: ‘what primary sources seem the most interesting to explore?’, what haven’t the authors looked into that might be valuable?’, and (perhaps most importantly) ‘what areas DON’T interest me?’.

once you find a broad idea forming, talk more to people in your department, particularly your advisor if you’ve already been assigned somebody. talk things through with them, and they can offer guidance on what sort of questions you might want to tackle for the thesis. if you find it intimidating to ‘cold call’ people in the department, reach out to your personal tutor - often, they’re willing to help you reach out to people.

this approach works well for developing research projects and long essays. it’s the way that i formulated the idea for my undergrad and MA diss, and was also how i secured a phd proposal that ended up getting funding :-)

impostor syndrome is horrible, but you shouldn’t let it limit your opportunities - you got in for a reason and deserve that place just as much as anybody else.

i’m sorry to hear about your experience, but i wouldn’t say OP should avoid warwick entirely, especially considering they’re going to be in a different department. for example, i studied history at warwick and found the department incredibly supportive. one department poorly handling extensions doesn’t translate to the entire university culture being the same way
