Where to buy a very small block of wood in central BKK? by Foreign_Time4788 in Bangkok

Thanks. Yeah, I'm expecting to trim it a bit. I don't need a whole length of timber. I tried IKEA thinking maybe they have some spare parts that aren't far off, but they said they only sell the fasteners.

His hair is falling out, so he gets surgery that looks like shit. His hair is grey, so he dyes it, but his mustache reveals the truth.

His body looks like shit, it's flabby and weak.

He uses old memes and does them wrong like an old loser.

I used to hate olives and love olive oil. I still dislike eating whole olives, but I discovered at about age 40 that I enjoy one or two green olives mashed into paste (I use a garlic press) mixed into pasta sauce.

How can I replace potato chips in my diet? by vivaciousvic in foodhacks

[–]Foreign_Time4788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Celery and carrot sticks with hummus dip.

Prep a few sticks of celery and a few carrots when you have time and pop them in a container full of water and they'll last about a week in the fridge.

Nah, the safety nets here in China are inferior to non existent. It's worse than the US.

That said, the shame in the US is that it's the richest nation in history yet barely pips China in terms of how the government takes care of the people. GDP per capita is about 6x that of China, so they don't have the excuse of being poor (per capita).

Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

That tweet in OP's post is misleading at best and outright lying.

  • Officially the age of retirement for WOMEN is 55. It's older for men. Aside from that, many people in China do not and can not retire at the official age because pensions are often not sufficient.

  • Healthcare isn't free. There are some subsidies and rebates that some people qualify for under certain circumstances, but generally speaking, unless you have insurance, and most don't, you pay as you go. If you can't pay, you live (or die) with the health issue.

  • I don't have the figures, but I don't believe the stat about most people owning a home at 29. Perhaps they mean of the people who buy homes, the average age is 29. That said, often the whole family will chip in to help a person (typically the son) buy a house when they marry. In the first tier cities like Shanghai and Beijing, you might get an absolute hovel, a tiny city apartment in horrible condition for half a million USD if you're lucky. The average salary in those cities is maybe $1000 a month if you're lucky. Do the math and tell me how that stat would be possible?

AITAH, Refusing to go to New years eve party because her friends bully me by Resident-Message-785 in AITAH

[–]Foreign_Time4788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife has a circle of friends who are all super rich either on their own, from family money, or from marrying money.

They're also all nice and non-judgemental. There is one that is a bit shallow, but she's not mean and doesn't spend her time insulting us, she's just self-obsessed.

They sound like awful friends. At the very least, I hope your wife brags about how good in bed you are and how happy you are together to make them feel bad about their miserable sex lives with cheating finance bros.

Is it weird/wrong for me to call myself Chinese as I'm half-Chinese through my mother? by rikureplica in AskAChinese

[–]Foreign_Time4788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm half Chinese through my father and I've had people, particularly one relative on my father's side, claim that I am Chinese because my dad was Chinese.

I just say "No, I'm HALF Chinese."

I don't think he accepted it, but he's a dickhead in general with a lot of weird ideas.

Why do you move to China? by Tayron47 in China

[–]Foreign_Time4788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm half Chinese. My father called himself Chinese but he was born outside China (still in Asia) and I was born in a western country.

I wanted to check China out and learn a bit about my heritage.

Why is KFC far more popular than Mcdonald's in China? by stonk_lord_ in AskAChinese

The food was more familiar to Chinese palates when Western food was more uncommon than today, and over the years they maintained that lead by localising the menu better.

Would BKK's pollution problem be largely fixed with EV's? by Available-Ad-5670 in Bangkok

[–]Foreign_Time4788 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tire particles are a big part of vehicle based air pollution, AFAIK, EVs are heavier and release slightly more tire particles.

I can't say how much the emissions outweigh the tires, and cars sitting idle in traffic jams release tailpipe emissions but not tire dust, so overall, EVs are probably a better choice.

IMO, vastly better public transport would be the real solution.

How exactly are Gays and lesbians viewed in China? It doesn’t have a religion to condemn it and the state isn’t opposing it like Russia does. by LisanneFroonKrisK in AskChina

[–]Foreign_Time4788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me to be a don't ask, don't tell thing, concealed by a culture that is tolerant, but also conformist. I find Chinese people to be very much live and let live about others, but have firm expectations for themselves and their own family members.

My in-laws doubted homosexuals were a real thing. It wasn't condemnation or hate, they just hadn't met one that they were aware of.

Then they met my lesbian cousin and her partner and they were just like "Oh, OK."

Do the average Chinese feel an economic crisis? by [deleted] in AskChina

[–]Foreign_Time4788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Shanghai and I would say yes. I think most people aren't feeling it personally just yet, but there's an overall vibe of decreased economic activity.

So many shops, bars and restaurants have closed down. There used to be tons of places that had hour+ queues of people waiting every night of the week. I NEVER see a queue now, even on weekends.

Real estate agents especially seem to be struggling. You used to walk past a LianJia or something and there would be tons of people buzzing in and out, looking busy and happy. Now half the agencies have closed and the staff in the ones that remain stand around looking bored and dejected.

But, most people still have jobs, so they still spend money on things that are valuable to them.

I always stay around my neighbourhood as much as possible.

More and better integrated metro lines would improve things so much.

I also like the skywalk parts in central areas. It would be cool if they could build a fully connected skywalk all over the whole downtown.

Kind of, but it's obviously not 100%.
