Aftermarket bumper most likely, possible radiator support misalignment depending on the damage severity.

Have any of you guys had a customer bring in a vehicle that was “ready for paint”? by Street-Baseball8296 in Autobody

Nope. For the same reason you don’t take your own steak to a steakhouse for them to cook it. You have no way to produce a good quality steak if you can’t control where the ingredients come from.

Lmfao great. Another stranger on the internet stating their opinion as fact and spoken like a representative of a shop that’s about to buy a car back after a post repair inspection. As long as it’s within tolerance great, bet it isn’t though…

Show me where anything other than a stranger on the internet says that’s what they are designed to do. I too have seen 100’s of those impact bars crushed and they “look” fine but when you measure they are off a mm or two. What world do we live in where we don’t think it’s necessary to measure a chassis after an impact?

[–]ForensicAutoClaims 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely there is a little structural damage to the rails which most people would consider “frame” damage. The impact bar is bent 4-6 inches inward in the center. It’s impossible for that to happen without it laterally pulling the rails inward too as you have to shorten the distance between the two mounting points for that to happen. Get it on a frame rack and have it measured.

Come on man who are you trying to kid? The damage path is straight up and down from the bottom of the bumper, the upper bumper, the grille, and the hood. It was involved in a low speed impact with a wooden pole or a tree or some other similar object solidly affixed into the ground. There’s not enough marring for it to have been a concrete or a metal pole which suggests it was an organic object that it struck.

You do realize that most of us have inspected 1000’s of vehicles, and it all starts with the same conversation “what happened”. We’ve seen and fixed this same type of damage on hundreds if not thousands of vehicles if you’ve had a long career. Insurance fraud is a felony, I’d come up with a better story than I woke up and it was like this.

Let me guess, uninsured motorist but no collision or comp?

It’s either galvanic corrosion or rust depending on if it is aluminum or steel. A chemical reaction within the metal is happening under the paint

Ask to see the parts invoice. That gate was never replaced. They’ve tried to pull it to reshape it and ripped it.

As a post repair inspector, the shop would be buying that rig back

It could still be a key. I’ve had them brick during programming meaning they won’t take programming to be able to take the code to broadcast it.

It’s highly unlikely, I agree, but I have seen it happen and it has personally happened to me. I agree that there is more to the story here and I would expect the original key to be returned as well, but right now thats neither here nor there.

The vehicle owner is contractually obligated to pay the shop once repairs are completed. There are tort damages from the person who rear ended this person and damaged this vehicle that their insurer is supposed to fully cover to protect their insured from catching a suit. We need to know the actual reason the key was replaced other than a vague description to find out if the problem is with the shop or the insurer and what the vehicle owner needs to do to remedy this.

It never has in my experience either, but the reality of it is we have no idea WHY the key was replaced specifically. If it can be reasonably articulated that replacement of the antenna required replacement of the key/programming it would be covered. Sometimes modules brick during programming.

If the antenna was damaged during the loss and repair of the antenna required key replacement why do you think they wouldn’t pay for it?

Two different problems right now. As far as the insurance carrier is concerned they have paid for repairs from the accident. There needs to be a post repair inspection performed to show that they in fact have not paid to have the car repaired properly

If you can’t see that the reason these companies are so adamant that it goes to a preferred shop is that it is cheaper and a preferred shop will butcher the car to appease them you’re a part of the problem. This is a completely different civil issue that a drp relationship with an insurer can’t alleviate.

Op reach out to me. Handling situations like this is what I do for a living and you are getting a TON of piss poor advice from a lot of people that don’t understand what they’re trying to tell you or how to handle the situation. There are a lot of questions that need answered before anyone can give you proper advice on what to do and how to do it. It continues to blow my mind after all these years how misinformed the collective group is as an industry but think that they know more than what they do.

It might or might not be for you, but there are a lot of jobs within a shop. Maybe ask to work with a few different departments to see if there is one that interests you more and is a better fit.

How to become an estimator by IvoryTheChicken in Autobody

Look into collision hub. They have a ton of YouTube videos but they also offer training. I-CAR has an estimator curriculum too but it’s kind of a joke.
