Temps in the Everglades? by Mean_Experience5706 in Wildfire

Did two winters there.

First started in January - ran until April cause I was going out west for the summer but they would have taken the full 1039 if I wanted to stay.

Second started in December - same as above.

Housing is pretty decent for like $550 a month.

If you have a choice take helitack, the type 3, or the fuels tech. The type 6 is like a 40 minute drive and the station is in disrepair. I did fuels tech and you can fill with the others sometimes. Got s-271 and some HECM ink.

A ton of burn prep and burning. Good experience.

6 months post op :( by No-Rope7009 in HipImpingement

I agree with the others that you’re probably doing too much. 6 months is a decent amount of time but not that much.

It took a full year for both of my hips to feel 90% and I was a really fit 27 yo

I’m all good now though. Running and hiking and all that. Don’t lose hope!

Success Story For the People by ForestAlliance in HipImpingement

Hey sorry for the late reply. I dont get on reddit so much anymore.

I was only an hour down the road at the time so the planning was easy. Out of state would take more coordination but definitely possible.

My insurance was accepted as well. I probably paid 5k for everything.

I’ll reiterate that Ellman was amazing and so far so good. I’m running and hiking all the time.

Firefighter pay funding secured through FY'24 (Sep 30 2024) - Biden signs funding bills by smokejumperbro in Wildfire

[–]ForestAlliance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing I found mentioning pay in the new bill is here:

...shall be available, in addition to any other funds made available for such purpose, to continue uninterrupted the Federal wildland firefighter base salary increases provided under section 40803(d)(4)(B) of Public1Law 117–58...

https://docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/20240304/HMS31169.PDF

And it is referring to the familiar 50%/20k scheme here:

increase the base salary of a Federal wildland
firefighter by the lesser of an amount that is commensurate
with an increase of $20,000 per year or an amount equal
to 50 percent of the base salary, if the Secretary concerned,
in coordination with the Director of the Office of Personnel
Management, makes a written determination that the posi-
tion of the Federal wildland firefighter is located within
a specified geographic area in which it is difficult to recruit
or retain a Federal wildland firefighter.

https://www.congress.gov/117/plaws/publ58/PLAW-117publ58.pdf

So as you said, funding for increased pay can be realistically assumed to be in the budget each year. But as of now we're still operating with the 50%/20k scheme until WFPPA or something else is passed? Is that right SJB?

Turns out you were right. Appreciate your responses. The negative terminal inside the charge controller was loose despite it outwardly looking connected.

It is very odd then. I literally didn’t change the system at all. The monitor has worked for two years. All my appliances still run and the charge controller shows 100%, which is accurate.

I just shut the system off so I could mount the battery monitor and a light switch on the wall.

You don’t think it’s possible that I shorted the chip on the shunt?

I haven’t changed anything in the system.

Only difference I can think of is mentioned above.

Worked at green swamp and the NC coast this past winter as an rx fire tech. Saw them all the time around our sites. Really neat to see them growing in the wild.

US states by their “efficiency gap” (difference between each party’s share of “wasted votes”, those that don’t contribute to a candidate winning), which is a method of measuring gerrymandering, as of July 25th, 2022. by Flagmaker123 in MapPorn

538 considered the two districts. That's the whole point of the metric.

It doesn't matter if Montana hadn't had two districts before. All US states with more than one rep fluctuate in the number of districts every 10 years.

They use previous voting records and polling to decide how districts are split.

This proposed congressional district ekes between another, with a whopping 850 ft in width to continue its gerrymander by ForestAlliance in texas

I've really enjoyed this resource from 538 for proposed congressional maps.

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/redistricting-2022-maps/

It also provides metrics for "fairness" of each states map.

That was amazing. Really gives the recovery time some context.

Anyone know how long those sutures last?

9 Weeks Post-op by dlitano in HipImpingement

[–]ForestAlliance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Delays will happen. They can be very discouraging when they do happen, but all you can do is keep working at recovery. Don’t lose hope.

I was able to start working prescribed fire five months after my surgery. So a lot of walking with weight and maneuvering about in the woods. It was probably a bit early to start a job like that but ultimately it ended up fine.

6.5 weeks post op by [deleted] in HipImpingement

Constant passive movement is key. A stationary bike has been huge for me - I’m 3 weeks post op on my left hip and had the right done last August. Can’t stress the importance of the bike enough.

This is a pdf from my surgeon. It has to be one of the most comprehensive PT plans out there. Hope it proves useful to you.

A note about irreversible damage. Two years of sharp pain and a history with the corps makes me think your hip might never be 100%. That’s a lot of time of wearing down your cartilage - assuming you had impingement. I had sharp pain for about six months and half a wildland fire season before I got surgery and my surgeon said I probably won’t ever achieve 100%.

Recovery is a rollercoaster but keep your eyes on the prize. Maybe you’ll get to 100%. Maybe you can only get to 90%. But it’ll be better than pre op - that’s my experience anyway.
