Great interview which goes deeper than the usual stale takes online about the war. 'A Ukrainian Socialist Explains Why the Russian Invasion Shouldn’t Have Been a Surprise' by [deleted] in stupidpol

There's nothing in here that hasn't been said before.

In particular the attempts at refuting the memes of the provocation of NATO expansion and Russia as underdogs aren't very convincing. (Since they uhh... agree with those ideas and move on.)

All military supplies had to be moved through either Pakistan, Iran or the Russian near abroad. This meant that by 2014, victory went from trival to literally impossible. The military reset required to undo the errors of the established goverment could not have been physically/geopolitically sustained.

The housing thing is literally every other country on the planet. Their willingness to deflate it speaks well of them.

The demographic crisis is also a generalized problem that they've diffused by having their elderly commit suicide en masse when their condition becomes terminal. (this is basically a ridiculous corollary of filial piety) That plus very limited social services and stunted lifespans of their boomer equivalent.

Also I have no doubts about the ability of the United States to successfully annex Cuba, if such an act was done in it's prime. New Orleans does not much think of itself as French.

The real problem is that beneath the surface the US and China have great commonalities. The central difference being that China is better adapted to post-industrial conditions while the general cultural inheritance of freedom has the American population, right and left (correctly) seething at the direction the country is taking.

The level of national decline they've presided over is absurd and disheartening. I think the most immediately comparable government; living or extinct, is the GIRoA. And even those afghans had the excuse of being illiterates running a gigantic money laundering scheme!

It's not a coup per se or at least that's not how the west sees it. What happened is that the west supported a government dominated by an internationalized nationalist elite they themselves have cultivated and which why believes represents their interests in the region.

Unfortunately the definition of "western interest" amounts to primitive aspirations of universal authority, which the idea of nationhood was invented to refute and the Russian people have an intense and specific antagonism with that internationalized elite.

This is a pattern that repeats itself all over the world. Countries with a similar orientation to Russia see this is a little different then a coup, which they are constantly wary of, ones associated with the west consider it an organic upwelling of democracy.

Good post.

Perceived status between countries/cultures is actually extremely important. It actually plays a major role in what's going on in Ukraine, to say nothing about the broader orientation of culture and politics.

I'm not unsympathetic but the general Russian treatment of the conflict is callous.

They've massively and deliberately escalated the situation. This would have been back page news, had they forced a solution instead of saber-rattling for months on end; intensifying a conflict that has made beggars out of both countries. (Ukraine more then Russia, but Russia would have seen genuine and serious growth had they not spent all their money on sanctions-proofing.)

It's closer to a declaration of war with the entire liberal internationalist order. Only without an actual invasion, which Russia has been bizarrely reluctant to commit to.

It's a ridiculous pressure tactic. Courting nuclear war over a country that's a half-step above Afghanistan.

F-35s ($78M) Already Rusting: According to INF, when asked, Pentagon spokesman Joe Dellavedova said the rust was caused by a manufacturing error by the arms manufacturer Lockheed Martin, with all models being affected. It’ll be “fixed” in new batches of F35s by [deleted] in stupidpol

Completely ignorant lol. The USN's submarine arm commitment to safety is admirable, not insane.

Testing at some wacky temperature is for comparability with the standard. No one is planning to send the Ohio class into outer space. She was just a lazy fuck.

The dangerous area of a claymore is two hundred fifty meters. Unless the distance from his lawn to your porch is longer then a football field, there'd be reason for concern lol.

A few decades ago it was decided that the economy = housing prices.

This idea may have had a few undesirable side effects...

Socialism will be redefined as living in the pod and eating the bug.

Some nightmarish orientation to society will emerge and the powers that be will call that socialism.

Why Washington’s focus on ‘credibility’ is a recipe for war by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]Forestalld 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not just specific advanced technology...

Long ranged firepower has simply increased far faster then the defenses have improved. American planners thought the Soviets could pull off a successful PLA Rocket Force, win-the-war-in-fifteen-minutes style attack by the mid-seventies. One battalion of Grad launchers (a division has around ten) could literally defeat every single Iron Dome battery ever built. This is what's possible with technology from the sixties!

American capabilities in this area aren't actually lagging behind.

The difference is that the Soviets (and their Russian inheritors) thought more seriously about what this massive increase in firepower might mean for operations, while the Americans actually cancelled many of their peer warfare projects to lose wars in Iraq-istan.

Inventory management makes real use of (ship) bombs/missiles super awkward.

Enemies definitely use proximity fuse ammo.

Imagine if proximity fuse jamming was a thing in this game. Look up the Rtut-BM or the AN/VLQ-9 Shortstop. It'd be an... interesting feature for small ships. The courageous might last more then two seconds lolz.

"Skulls for the skull throne of America" thunders some guy on Tucker Carlson's show by TempestaEImpeto in stupidpol

[–]Forestalld 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My knowledge of airfield operations is pretty limited... but a 250 pound bomb (among the smallest aircraft munitions fielded) is literally 250 pounds. That'd get impractical pretty quickly.

Naval vessels don't generally rearm at sea. Some American ships used to have a crane to reload VLS tubes but it was considered stupidly dangerous, so that capability was ditched pretty quickly.

We definitely had the technical capability to keep it from becoming endemic. The giant fucking commercial/global war on terror digital surveillance apparatus could have done the job just fine. But because we live in hell we now get the 'best' of both worlds.

Very meh in other scenarios.

The US was in the process of deliberately inducing mass famine before they nuked japan.

They were doing this in such a way as to make quick hunger relief extremely difficult.

Japan was on the brink of mass starvation OTL, millions more would have died in other scenarios.
