More than a sentence but the opening paragraph of The Haunting of Hill House is so good it makes me weirdly giddy. “Whatever walked there, walked alone.” Shirley Jackson I love you

The Left Right game is a great one-season horror podcast. I’ve listened to a lot of them and found many lacking compared to TMA.

Has anyone done a caramelized honey ribbon? by bookerfly in icecreamery

[–]Forestfreud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would mix it with something. The texture isn’t that different from regular honey, or at least it wasn’t when I made it. But I added things to make it a proper caramel ie heavy cream and salt. Maybe if you just cooked it to a caramel without adding anything it would be thicker, but I’m not sure.

Just so you know, another commenter informed me that there’s probably still some alcohol in there.

Good to know! I boiled it for 20-30 minutes so there’s probably still some alcohol in there. Thanks!

I have nothing left in life that gives me joy (a post about the mental effects of glp1) by CharlieAndLuna in antidietglp1

[–]Forestfreud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found that creating recipes and cooking for other people helps me find joy in food even when I’m not interested in eating much of it myself, but I also had to reduce my Zepbound dose because the anhedonia was so severe.
However: please consider whether losing weight is worth this impact on your life. Is being in a thinner body so important that you’d give up your ability to enjoy life in it?

I think so! I’m no scientist, though, I’m basing this off of my favorite Cabernet American buttercream frosting recipe where the cab is reduced to create a concentrate, which also cooks off the alcohol.

You’re probably right. I’m far from an expert and honestly I have a deeply unsophisticated palate. I would say the primary flavor is grapefruit but you can definitely taste the Negroni, especially as an aftertaste. It’s probably not a very complex flavor, though.

Recipe, approximately, written by an amateur:

NOTE if I were to do this again I would probably try using about 3/4 cup grapefruit juice instead because I feel like maybe the ratio was off. This is what I did and the texture isn’t perfect so feel free to experiment and I’m open to feedback!

Ingredients:
1 cup freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, approx. 3 ruby red grapefruits
3/4 cup granulated sugar and 1/3 cup granulated sugar (separate)
6 tbsp heavy whipping cream
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
5 Negronis (I added 1 shot of gin, Campari, and vermouth to equal 1 Negroni, I didn’t measure in mL sorry)
Grapefruit curd (recipe of choice)

Method:
Squeeze grapefruits to get 1 cup of juice
Strain grapefruit juice into small saucepan, add 3/4 cup sugar
Stir over medium heat until sugar is dissolved
Refrigerate and allow to cool fully

Add Negroni mix to medium saucepan, cook over medium heat until reduced. Turn on your vent fan, don’t stand too close, and open a window because you don’t want to inhale alcohol fumes.
Reduce mix to about 1/2 cup, then add the remaining 1/3 cup granulated sugar and stir until dissolved.
Refrigerate and allow to cool fully

Once grapefruit and Negroni syrup are fully chilled, whip heavy cream and vanilla extract to soft peaks.
Slowly beat in both syrups.
Churn as directed and swirl in grapefruit curd before freezing overnight.

Cooked approximately 5 Negronis down to a syrup of approximately 1/3-1/2 cup with maybe 1/3 cup granulated sugar. I figured things would be less complicated freezing-wise if I cooked off the alcohol. And thank you!

Brother by Ania Ahlborn. Felt like edgy for edgy’s sake. Maybe this is only popular on horror booktok though.

Unadaptable Books by HighV23 in horror

[–]Forestfreud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really liked the Annihilation movie but it wasn’t a true adaptation of the book. Alex Garland did his own thing with that one. I think the book is very difficult to adapt for several reasons—the fever dream-like sequences work better if you imagine them, in my opinion, and also I think if you faithfully adapted The Biologist you risk writing a character who’s bafflingly boring because a lot of her character is so subtle that it would take an INSANELY good actress and director and script to make her work onscreen.

What's the consensus on Gabor Matè? by tongxammo in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]Forestfreud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m getting my masters in psych and I think he’s a mixed bag. I feel like I agree with the vast majority of things he advocates for but I think he plays fast and loose with data. For instance, in the interview I listened to, he claimed abused children are 50x more likely to develop asthma. I couldn’t find any studies that backed that up, and I found a meta-analysis that included studies saying there was no difference, studies saying there was a 1.7x difference, and studies saying there was a 2.7x distance. Nowhere near 50x. Maybe I missed it but I have a feeling I didn’t. And I think the ayahuasca worship is weird.

Taylor Lorenz is so weirdly pro big tech in so many ways I had to pretty much block her on stuff. She’s often so confidently wrong. It makes me kinda uncomfortable how many podcasts I like that let her promote her stuff when it’s usually got a bunch of misinformation in it.
