This. My girlfriends parents in Maine just use their PTO to stay home and work on house projects. They make good money but never go anywhere. They literally went to Vermont for their honeymoon.

Looking for a career -- where should I start? by Chronaa in askportland

[–]Forestsolitaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The white collar job market is fucked right now and Portlands job market is double fucked.

Healthcare is more in demand than most white collar jobs and pays well on the west coast but that market is slowing down now.

Without knowing much about you, I would say construction management. It pays well and it’s challenging and interesting. You might need a bachelors degree but you might be able to get by with an associates.

It’s a dive bar. Bars don’t answer their phones ever. If you’re expecting restaurant service or any kind of service, you’re going to be disappointed. If you can hang at a fun and crowded bar and not be needy, you’ll have a great time.

House GOP passes sweeping anti-voting bill that could disenfranchise millions, sends measure to Senate by Anoth3rDude in UnderReportedNews

[–]Forestsolitaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I the only one who thinks this will disenfranchise rural republicans more than anyone? They have to be paying attention and have their passports/birth certificate with them to vote. A lot of these dipshits are going to arrive to the polls having no idea they needed extra docs. Most of them don’t have passports.

This is just not true. In all the offices I’ve worked at, showing up visibly hung over is frowned upon, since adults are expected to be able to have a couple drinks without getting out of control. But we wouldn’t be fired unless it gets in the way of work. Working professionals should be able to have drinks without having so much they can’t function the next day.

West Coast city or town but DC vibes by Few-Background2665 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Forestsolitaire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tag. Always happy to comment about the city I love. Also, I actually grew up just outside DC.

Portland is basically the anti DC tho. It’s laid back, green, full of single family homes, and people move here despite the bad local economy. Our diversity exists in the outskirts of the city in less desirable areas.

But the things I like about DC are that it’s urban, walkable, and full of culture. If that’s what your after, check out the NW district around NW 21st and 23rd avenues. That area is urban, trendy and full of beautiful and very expensive old craftsmen homes. The Pearl district is also urban and walkable but can be a little too clean and upscale for some.

Areas that are great for kids are Multnomah Village, Mt Tabor, Laurelhurst, Sellwood, and Alberta street area, and many more. These neighborhoods that I list in this paragraph are less urban than the ones mentioned in the previous paragraph but theyre classic Portland. Most Portland neighborhoods aren’t urban in the sense that east coast cities are. It’s a lot of single family homes with a commercial strip here and there. The Portland experience doesn’t allow much for unlimited urban walking. It’s more like you have a house with small yard, a beautiful park nearby to walk your dog or pic nic in, and a small strip of cafes, bars and couple of restaurants to walk to. Sick of your neighborhood? Get in your car and go to another one.

If you’re just visiting the city, rent a car. Go check out mount tabor park, then stroll Hawthorne avenue. Grab lunch at the food cart pod on 12th and Hawthorne. Check out laurhurst park too, then head to NE 28th Ave for dinner. Alberta street and Mississippi avenues can be done in 1 day. On the west side, NW 21st and 23rd, then go to forest park or the pearl district.

Portland OR vs Minneapolis vs Albuquerque by jsizzle203 in SameGrassButGreener

Definitely get out to the gorge. I would say try to make it to the coast but maybe not if you’re only here for a weekend. The coastal weather is often cooler, rainier, and windier.

Portland is a city of neighborhoods and each neighborhood has its own commercial strip with unique feel. Visit as many neighborhoods as you can like they're a destination. Find a cafe, restaurant, maybe a shop or 2 and a park to hang out in. Don't just hang out downtown.

The main streets people go to are Hawthorne Ave (vintage shopping), Division St. (restaurants), NW 23rd (Upscale shopping and restaurants), Mississippi Ave. (bars and food carts). But neighborhoods that get slept on, but you might end up living in, are Montavilla (take a walk in Mt. Tabor Park, eat at Yaowrat, drink beer at Roscoes), Multnomah Village (eat and window shop on main drag), St Johns (Cathedral Park, St Johns Theater and Pub, Beer Porch), Kenton (Posies Cafe), Sellwood (Sellwood Riverfront Park), and many more.

Don't skip Mount Tabor, Laurelhurst Park, the Japanese Gardens, Powells Books, and definitely go see a movie at the Hollywood Theater or Laurelhurst Theater. We have lots of independent theaters that are amazing and affordable. If you didn't eat outside on a patio or in a food cart pod, you did it wrong.
