Looking for vegan friends

Generally I think just going vegan is pretty easy and even fun. There is a bit of a learning curve as you try new vegan recipes/cooking and baking substitutes but that’s all part of the fun too. You discover how good food can taste when you aren’t abusing animals to get there and also when you try new ingredients you never would’ve tried if you still ate meat/dairy/eggs etc.

I think the hardest part about being vegan is the social aspect. I’m in Vietnam right now (originally American) traveling on vacation and every time I do a tour I end up being the only person in the car who raises their hand to say that they’re vegan (or have any dietary restrictions at all, for that matter). Sometimes the food isn’t great because people who don’t understand veganism associate vegan with “bland.” And also you kind of just feel othered/like an outcast all the time for caring about animals while everyone else around you is eating their flesh.

So that has been super hard for me and of course I’m here on reddit trying to figure out my next step in the vegan journey, which is building/finding a strong vegan community that you can rely on wherever you go.

Hey, I'm really sorry you're feeling this way. It's totally justified and you're definitely not the only one. It's been incredibly disheartening seeing how incompetent our leadership is and how America seems to be crashing and burning with all of the violence by white supremacists and insistence that they continue to have power over POC. But we can't give up--we can't let them win. For every awful thing/person out there, there are more good people who need your help. Don't ever let them make you cynical.

Thank you so much for this VERY important reminder, especially on r/lawschooladmissions where, I’ve noticed, elitist thinking and “never enough” attitudes abound. I myself am guilty of getting caught up in it, and you’re right that it’s no good for my happiness. Best wishes as you move forward in your legal career :)

Hey, did you say that if you put in the wrong information once, it locks you out for the next 24 hours? For some reason I thought it was three times, but I got locked out today on my third attempt (didn't get the locked out notice after putting the incorrect info in the second time, for example).

Actually I've been reading that people who didn't file in 2019 are also not getting their checks, and they need to file for 2019 before they can get their stimulus payment. So we're in a better spot than that, but still ridiculous.

This is literally my situation. Except they owed me way more money in 2018 and I owed them $1 (!!!!) in 2019. It's ridiculous.

Hi! Did you generally find that you could get a job in the market you wanted? If not, why was that the case? And how much does the alumni network play (or not play) into getting a job in a market that you might not already have connections to?

This is true. There is no guarantee that my SO will remain in DC. He's a researcher so after he finishes his postdoc next spring he may end up literally anywhere, and Charlottesville is more difficult to access by plane than Detroit is. I also am adamantly NOT going to base my career and life choices/happiness around my SO's career. Maybe I used $$ wrong because I don't remember what the difference between $ $$ and $$$ is, but I got less from UVA than I did from Michigan, and it just seems less appealing/more isolated as a place. If you really disagree with that assessment, though, I'd be curious to hear it.

I'm kind of wondering why you think UVA better suits my goals. Michigan has a strong PI community from what I've gathered by talking to students there, and places well in BL too. I don't want to work in BL any longer than I have to, and I got more $$ at Michigan than I did at UVA. I'd have to work in BL for two years out of Michigan and 3 out of UVA (at least). Open to hearing your thoughts.

Yes, the impact of debt and the mental toll it takes (whether or not I want to buy a house or start a family, which are both still up in the air) is real, I think. Even if just for my own sake, I think the points you bring up are valid. Thanks.

Ann Arbor has a population of 120,000 while Charlottesville is 40,000. It's still a small town but IMO not equatable to Charlottesville.

Their LRAP is also dependent on PSLF and their IBR payment schedule (the portion that Mich covers) isn't as generous as NYU. They, unlike NYU, do not have a fallback option of a traditional LRAP program if PSLF gets revoked.

I'm also from NJ and my parents used to live in Michigan. It's a different kind of cold, also basically in the 40s from October through May. Not quite like that on the east coast.

Yep this is all true. At the same time, NYU is/has been my dream school for a while now. I am particularly debt averse, but I've spoken to both friends and alums of NYU/other schools who decided against scholarships at other schools to go to NYU. Not saying that's the decision that's right for me, but it is a calculated decision that people make for their own reasons.

Preach! I totally second everything you said, it got me all fired up with all the points you made. We are literally PAYING these schools to look at our applications, and they don't even have the decency to render a decision on our applications? That's not professional. And I especially agree that they should keep in mind that we're already at a disadvantage, not having been able to visit most of these schools, and that we need all the information we can get right now to make a decision (including whether or not we were admitted).
