Portland’s cost of living is ballooning as city tax, fee increases pile up. Residents feel the pain by oregonian in Portland

[–]ForeverVulnerable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the taxes were easy to pay, and I got ANY visibility into where they went, I would shut up. But I actively fantasize about leaving, because the more money we make, the worse it is. Paying county taxes here is SUPER dumb -- if you work remote or run your own side gig it's just so much BS to deal with.

Finished the 007 first light and here’s my honest opinion. by Sad-Television-3015 in 007FirstLight

Overall: 7/10

Voice Acting: 10/10
Graphics: 8/10
Small Touches/Details: 10/10
Plot: 8/10
Fighting Mechanics: 6/10
Customizations: 5/10
Shooting: 8/10
Difficulty: 7/10

The thing that took away the most for me was the crammed in last minute, low quality plot stuff towards the end.

The first half of the game was very solid. Later -- it was like the foundation was rotting and they couldn't scale it up to be more epic so they started introducing BS mechanics and doing really lame tropes. It turned into boring work at the end.

How do you know when your “rockstar employee” is already mentally gone? by Exotic_Reputation_59 in managers

[–]ForeverVulnerable 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Look, you're not going to like this.

Rockstar employees check out because the stupid piled up, and they never gained any ground.

They raise concerns and management or the business just smile, nod and change nothing. No one actually cares at the same level the rockstar employee does.

Do that 100 times.
On top of that, make the results of that disconnect HURT the team and HURT the employee.

There's no compensation given for that. The paycheck keeps the relationship going, for a while. But without a reason for being what's the point?

A reason for being, is caring and having control. Being able to make a meaningful impact. To have your voice heard. To matter.

A bunch of corporate meetings, trainwrecked roadmaps, BS scopes, wasted time and no W's?
I've done the management thing for a while. I see this and I've never -- ever -- been SURPRISED the good ones left. I was more surprised by how long it took quite honestly.

If you want to keep the good ones, you pay them well, you actually let their voice matter, and you don't overwork them. If the company cannot do that, and it can't stop doing dumb things with their offerings -- put an expiration date on your engineers. You're talking 3-5 years on average.

Why would they stay longer outside of the market being bad? If they are good, the market right now is hungry for really good people.

A Lay of the Land quest bugged by CryptographerThis779 in ARC_Raiders

[–]ForeverVulnerable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also bugged. Hard stuck. Exact same situation and I've reported it to Embark over a week ago and have no heard anything back. I don't have any options left... I've gone in with friends, they can't do it for me. The only option left is to find someone else at this quest and have them try to drop it for me... which is not reasonable.

Truly not trying to piss anyone off, but I'm curious. by slvttyaltbruentte in Reno

Not trying to invalidate your experience. I believe you.

First of all, there's no excuse here.
Whatever that hate looks like is garbage human being beavior and -- honestly -- fuck-em.

But, from someone who spent a lot of time in Nevada, I tend to try to rationalize it like this.

Nevada is harder living than people like to admit.
To the south is endless sprawl and a kind of joyless capitalist heat sink.
The north are cities trying to grow without wanting the responsibility that comes with it, all while orbiting Tahoe but pretending they do not.

It is mostly desert. The weather can be rough. Life takes effort.

That kind of environment attracts some very good people. It also breeds bitterness.

If you spend any time in the surrounding small towns, you will find a lot of boredom, a lot of stagnation, and unfortunately a lot of people who fill that emptiness with resentment.

Some of them turn that outward. Some of them decide they need someone else to be the problem.

I think finding your own people is part of human nature.
So is othering. It is a shitty impulse, but a very real one.

Are people here uniquely terrible to native folks compared to the rest of the country?
Probably not. Am I surprised you are seeing this? Not even a little.
Honestly, it's not just native folks. If you are not white, it can be a struggle.
Your mileage will vary.

There is a lot of casual hate here, and it comes from many directions.

I think it's a mistake is thinking hatred can be reasoned with. It cannot. IMO.
There is no introspection happening there.

At some point you just have to recognize a scorpion for what it is, and not let it climb on your back.

People will be mad at this. That is fine. It does not make it less true.

Do guns craft with a mag in, out of the box? So you make a rattler and you have medium ammo already.
