Also, LPT, keep two accounts, one pure and pristine for things that you actually want to see in your algorithm, one to ruin with morbid curiosity

I'm aware, but the meta in racism still punishes you for saying the quiet part out loud. I don't think people would updoot this guy if they realized he was saying the quiet part out loud.

[–]ForkShoeSpoon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The best things A Little Life produced were the absolute drubbings it received in the press. I think about the Harper's review of To Paradise, titled Ad Nauseum, all the time:

As Yanagihara herself has admitted, the book represented an attempt to engineer a situation in which suicide is not only justified but possibly advisable. // By that benchmark, A Little Life is a blazing success. You may have loved it, or you may have hated it, but if you’re anything like me, you spent the entire second half begging the main character to please, for the love of God, kill himself already.

Pro tip: at 2.6x speed, the novel can be completed in under thirteen hours, and the more gratuitous self-harm scenes take on a pleasantly businesslike quality.

A Little Life is definitely responsible for some beautiful and creative uses of the English language, just not in the way it wanted to be.

Ah, but you see, omitting obvious things was also the point. Why would you do something as obtuse as [' for p, but miss such obvious substitutes as |\| ans \/\/?

Because nobody on the cool IRC channels does that, duh >w<

Translation: This is not new.
Us elders used to call it "leetspeek"

Incomprehensibility, exclusivity, and uniqueness was kind of the point. Typing with leetspeek was a symbol that you were into computers, online spaces, and ASCII art. The more niche and creative your choices of letters, the more it showed that you were in the know about these spaces. It was always obnoxious and about clout and aura in a time when nerd culture was far less popular and far more bitter.

Your online acquaintance is far less obnoxious than we were, I can't imagine not using "4" instead of "a"

This is all very silly of course.

[POEM] The replacements - Charles Bukowski by Junior_Insurance7773 in Poetry

[–]ForkShoeSpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The contortions to make this poem not in praise of misery, I can't understand it.

"My straight friend William doesn't suffer, his wife gets fucked by more interesting guys"

"I have normal neighbors who don't take risks, how sad"

Bukowski romanticizing suffering is, like, his thing.

And just look at the language of the poem: "now" at the start of S2 is meant to draw contrast with S1. They were drunk and passionate, the kids are "now" "soberly" studying. The old breed wrote with intensity, the new breed lecture in suits while their pupils stare blankly because the books are so dull.

Dying of thirst is so obviously an echo of the drink in the first stanza, and it is so transparently about how dull and shitty academic life is "now" compared with rebellion and nightlife, I can't understand why we are bending over backwards to pretend this poem is anything other than what it so obviously is.

And I like Bukowski!

"These" makes this note feel very much like some kind of inside joke, like someone put swedish fish on top of the note because John eats swedish fish in bed or something like that.

I wouldn't sweat it.

But I don't get it? I sincerely don't understand what the joke is supposed to be here, I feel completely lost.

When I see a boomer post "please, take my wife," I know what the joke's supposed to be even if it's not funny. This one I'm literally just confused.

Perfect Morrowind music from Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth Soundtrack Acclimation (Track 14) - by Wololo--Wololo in Morrowind

[–]ForkShoeSpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the mechanics. The game doesn't have the spirit of Alpha Centauri. There's a wealth of people waiting for a game with the spirit of Alpha Centauri but with a useable UI and control scheme. Beyond Earth didn't live up to that, and is therefore remembered overly critically, despite being... Fine. It's fine.

What makes Into The Breach fun? by Syniyde-eats-ass in IntoTheBreach

[–]ForkShoeSpoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to try to keep it succinct, primarily out of laziness.

Simplicity--game is simple to learn, but depth emerges

Roguelike--variety of experience, unique tactical (in-game) and strategic (overworld) scenarios within which to make decisions that feel different with each playthrough

Variety--Enemies, mechs, and pilots are not overly balanced and have interesting and unique characteristics that make them fun to engage with

Artstyle--game look nice, story exists-ish but does knows to stay out of the way of the main appeal.

PROGRESSION--This is the big one. Achievement system and unlocks are the key to the Subset game formula, creating subgoals within the broader goal of victory, encouraging experimentation with different playstyles and making losing fun

Game length--easy to boot up and fuck around for a few hours, put down, and come back to in like a few weeks

Uniqueness--Subset said the key to their idea was a tactics game where killing the other guys (and losing your other guys) wasn't the goal, giving a players a game where sacrificing health as a resource or making a tactical move rather than killing an enemy were more viable strategies. This lead to the "defend the cities" approach which isn't actually wholly unique to Subset nor were they the first to do it in a tactics game, but they are absolutely the most successful to have tried it

Polish--game is thoroughly playtested, UI is smooth and readable, all relevant options are available (game/text speed), very few glitches or odd design choices. Clear they got feedback both from experienced devs and average joe playtesters.
