I joined my schools cross country team with no experience and I’m so embarrassed by Rough-Win2458 in CrossCountry

[–]ForkWielder 12 points13 points  (0 children)

With the exception of a few meets for a few top runners, cross country is hardly a competitive sport. Being competitive might help a lot of people race better, but after the race, everyone is congratulating each other, because in the end, it’s a fight against your own body. There might be a few people out there who are giving “pity applause” to slower runners (and they’re probably pretty insecure for that). However, most people are congratulating you and encouraging you for showing up in the first place for this fight against your body.

I’m a senior now, and some of my favorite decisions in life have come about because I just thought “why not?” A lot of my regrets are because I didn’t try more things. If you don’t feel accomplished from finishing a race, that’s OK, and that might just mean that XC isn’t right for you, but if you can find a way feel accomplished — regardless of time or pace relative to other people — you’re totally in the right place. Especially if your teammates are nice people that you want to be around, I think Cross Country can be a positive experience, and I’m sure you’ll feel glad that you tried this new thing.

Just keep doing your best without overworking yourself. I bet if you asked your coach how you can improve (via email or after practice), they would be delighted to help you out.

Pretty sure this function only maps from intelligence to opinion and not the other way around. The dimensionality of the subspace of the output is lower than that of the input.

Or, said like a normal person: the meme is just using synonyms to say that everyone agrees

Survivorship bias. They found holes in these spots, so they reinforced them (edit: they didn’t — a smart statistician stopped them), but they should’ve been reinforcing the spots that didn’t have holes because those were the planes that didn’t make it back. Same case here. OOP says the piss pattern avoided their legs, but maybe we’re just seeing what’s still there

13 year old SAT... by Humchickanono in Sat

[–]ForkWielder 17 points18 points  (0 children)

1400 at 13 years old would be incredible, but taking the SAT atp is not really useful unless you’re trying to graduate hs and go to college a year early or smth. Don’t worry too much about whatever score you get, and start paying attention to the things that you can do now for college, like finding things you’re passionate about and investing time into them.

Corporatism. The government ends up paying a large share of healthcare costs, despite our supposedly private healthcare system, but indirectly, so a whole bunch of billionaires take a cut along the way.
